I am a North Carolinan now

They finally finished the road construction through Knoxville as of last summer. It's much more pleasant to pass through now.

Dave

Let's get one thing out on the table and very clear: You are not, nor will you ever likely be, a North Carolinian. Regardless of what might be printed on your drivers license.
That is BS. We kid around about Yankees and such, but you will never find a more welcoming and accommodating state in the Union. Speed some time here, adopt a local University to root for and before you know it, you will become a "North Carolinian" by osmosis . Learning to "shag" to beach music will not hurt either!.
Thats unfortunate. I never really was a New Mexican, an Arizonian, a New Englander, an Italian, or a German either.

Will I ever find a home?
As a born and bred and current NC resident, I welcome you to our fair state. I have a feeling you will adopt NC as your home in short order.
BTW the above recommendations re UNC and Duke are misguided. NCSU WOLFPACK is more your speed.

Got no hillbillies on my end of NC- there ain't no hills within 150 miles of here. But it's sure pretty, and the natives are friendly. I still wake up every morning, look out my window past the cypress-tree-studded bay toward a sunrise over the Albemarle Sound, and feel gratitude for having arrived in the promised land. Hope you find it so, too.

Ok. But you obviously weren't bred and born in Wake County, with that attitude ;)

Welcome to NC! The Winston Salem /GSO area's are a very nice place to live.

I sent the welcoming committee with a dusting of snow for you and your wife!

You and your wife are invited to Fayetteville anytime you like.

I see you live in Hope Mills.....

My Uncle and Cousin live in Hope Mills....figured I'd make the drive or flight out that way very soon to say hello to them. Maybe you and I (or us, if Brianna comes) can do lunch or something.

Sounds like a plan....

By now I imagine there are more displaced Yankees than native sons of the Confederacy in North Carolina.

Some "Sons of the Confederacy" now reside in the North.

Just sayin.....

:D

In certain areas that is true.

The other issue in NC are the "half backs".

These are the retired Northerners who moved to Florida, got to experience a few little wind storms and moved half way back to NC. These settle primarily near the ocean, or in the mountains. They are now complaining about the snow. Never happy. :cryin:

Nick,

Just remember to say "The War of Northern Aggression" and all will be well... ;)

Oh, and stay away from those bottles of spirits that might come out of the hills. Potent stuff....

Glad to see you "east", NC, like Virginia, is a great state, with both beaches and mountains. C'mon up to the Wings fly-b-q this year.

Yeah, the War of Northern Aggression, where the south got its collective ass kicked.

Beaches and mountains. Sounds like Washington, Oregon and California. :D

Yeah, the War of Northern Aggression, where the south got its collective ass kicked.

The War for Southern Independence. That didn't work out so well, either. Oh well, you all can continue that argument. My ancestors were "loyalists during the rebellion" and moved to Canada. They just served as spectators. :D

Really? How many deaths on the Reb side? How many on the North's side? You might want to check and see who really "kicked ass" with much less resources, and military assets.

Hell, mine were living in shtetls in Eastern europe getting kicked around from pogrom to pogrom.

Ticket is funny. We decided to leave Knoxville just in time to avoid the nasty storm last night. Unfortunately, where I-40 had been 65 the whole way though (so I drove 75), there is a stretch right outside Knoxville where it drops to 55. I was pulled over there, doing nearly 20 over.

Tennessee has a couple of stretches like that. The 55 area north of Chattanooga keeps getting longer and longer too...

Thats unfortunate. I never really was a New Mexican, an Arizonian, a New Englander, an Italian, or a German either.

C'mon up to Wisconsin. You can call yourself a Wisconsinite as soon as you stock your fridge with Leinie's and pledge allegiance to Saint Vince's Packers. :D

I witnessed an event where Nick loudly proclaimed his boistrous preference for all things green and gold. It happened at a small town market during an unplanned stop to wait out the weather. Smack in the middle of cheese country. Such was his enthusiasm for the Packers that I feel that you should confer honorary Wisconsinite upon the young turk. Wear it proudly, Nick.

No!!! Never! Lies, lies!!!

Wait, was I flying drunk?

Since my relatives are from Virginia, I was brought up calling it the War of Northern Aggression, and being told the stories of the gentleman being forced to surrender his sword to the drunk. An interesting contrast to the view north of the Mason-Dixon line of the rednecks vs. the civilized folk.

No doubt about it, the South was the underdog, fought a hard fight, and did incredibly well considering all the negatives they had going against them.

I can't believe I'm having this conversation. The South got its ass kicked. It was nearly leveled, and with 19th century technology. A big part of fighting the good fight is winning. You talk to kids about how well they did with what they had to make them feel better about loosing.

As with many things, Michael, you really give yourself too much credit with respect to knowledge.

I'd say there was plenty of loss to go around, but the Union was preserved, secession was prevented, slavery was abolished, and Federalism triumphed.

As we tiptoe towards the Spin Zone... I can hear it calling out "c'mon over to the dark side, and we'll rev up the debate...." :incazzato:

Since the war aims of the South (secession) were not met, and those of the North (Union) were, a casual observer might say that the South lost. But silly me, I must not know anything.

Slight editorial revision suggested. Instead of secession was prevented, I think it would be more accurate to say secession was forcably repealed.

The South was overwhelmed by more men and more resources. They killed many more Union soldiers but when you have almost unlimited resources, victory is inevitable. It was like Germany facing the Allies and the production capabilites of the U.S.

The Union armies loses are esimated at

Battle deaths: 110,070

Disease, etc.: 250,152

Total 360,222

The Confederate Armys losses are estimated at

Battle deaths: '''94,000

Disease, etc.: '''164,000

Total '''258,000

You're going to proceed to tell me the South won the war, and I just hadn't heard?

Nobody said otherwise. What was pointed out were the details, which go far beyond the bullet points. A scientist should know the value of details.

I would point out that for many battles, southern armies were on the defensive and entrenched. Being the guy in the fort, you're more likely to kill more invading soldiers, because they're not in a fort. Using your logic, one would say that Constantine XI won against Mehmed II, since the latter lost far more soldiers. History would disagree, though.

I am not insinuating the South "won". They clearly lost the war and were defeated by superior forces. I think they put up a very good fight though for the numbers and their funding/resources. To say they "got their ass kicked" doesn't do them justice. That's all I'm saying.

Only two southern capitals survived the destruction wrought in the Confederacy (can you name them?). Most centers of commercial and industrial activity were utterly destroyed. Damage to Confederate infrastructure was tremendous, the place was left a shambles after the war. That, in my book constitutes a pretty good wuppin'.

I think we are just coming at it from a different perspective. Germany lost the war also, and was largely destroyed, but I think the German forces fought well for their numbers and what they had. I think they were good soldiers, but foolishly believed in their psycho political leaders, but still had to defend their homeland.

I think the same of the South. They fought well for what they had. Did the South get destroyed? Yes. Was it the fault of the Condferate battle soldier? No.

Not sure about the capitals. Charleston and Savannah?

The south lost, that is a historical fact and indisputable. But the North was clearly out generaled! The better leaders were on the Confederate side by and large.
