Is this running through the built-in windows updater, or are you trying to manually update it with the windowsupdate website?

Go to 'Control Panel | Add and Remove Programs' and see if it's already installed. If it is then uninstall it and run the update again.

Auto updates; it dls them and I approve installs.
I checked and it is not in add/remove pgrms.

Boot into Safe Mode.

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32

Delete the folder "Catroot2" in C:\Windows\System32 . Do not delete the folder "Catroot." Only delete the folder "Catroot2."

Reboot the computer.

Attempt the update again.

Can't I just press Alt-Y while holding the shift key for 2 seconds? You guys make this so hard! Grr!

Ok ok, I will try that... mmm safe mode, safemode. F4 on startup? F8?
working on it, thanks.

safe mode
C:\Windows\System32
delete Catroot2 only
reboot

No change :(

Clicked on install new update and:

Must be deeper. Maybe a previous install is the problem.
This is the error I get when I dl'd the file and tried to execute it.

Tried this method, no joy.
Think I will bag it, can't see the value in persisting.

Rename the Catroot2 folder
Rename the Catroot2 folder (Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 only), and then try to install the program again.

Note Skip this method if the operating system is Windows 2000.

To rename the Catroot2 folder, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each line:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit
3. Remove all tmp*.cat files from the following folder:
%systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

If no files that start with tmp exist in this folder, do not remove any other files. The .cat files in this folder are necessary for installing hotfixes and service packs.

Important Do not rename the Catroot folder. The Catroot2 folder is automatically recreated by Windows, but the Catroot folder is not recreated if the Catroot folder is renamed.

Okay... just on a lark, you MAY want to try this.

Make sure you have the XP install disk handy.

Go into Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs / Add/Remove Windows Components.

Check the box for Internet Information Services (IIS). If it's already partially selected, see which parts are installed and make a note of them.

Click Next, watch the pretty progress bar, insert the disk if asked, reboot.

Try installing the update again.

If it installs, reboot, then go back and uninstall the IIS services you just installed (unless you actually need them, which is doubtful unless you're running some sort of server). If some of the components were selected, make sure they're still selected, because something you're running probably needs them.

this didn't come with a disk Rich....do you mean the recovery disk we are supposed to make ('its somewhere')

No, a standard XP installation disk. If it didn't come with one, then the chances are that the source files for this sort of thing are already saved on the C: drive.

It seems that the missing dependency may be the Front Page extensions or other IIS components.
