Has everyone noticed how large the jet stream wind formation is? To me it's a huge system covering almost all of CONUS. Not being a meteorologist, can anyone explain what implications this may have for us laypeople? Pretty impressive stuff.

Best,

Dave

Don't know about that, but it's getting green outside.

...MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION...
CONDITIONS ARE BECOMING FAVORABLE FOR AN ENHANCED RISK FOR SUPERCELLS
AND TORNADOES ACROSS SOUTHWEST MISSOURI. THE COMBINATION OF LOW LCL
HEIGHTS...STRONG WIND SHEAR...AND SUFFICIENT LOW LEVEL INSTABILITY
WILL PROVIDE A PRIME ENVIRONMENT FOR LARGE HAIL...DAMAGING
WINDS...AND TORNADOES OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS.

SATELLITE ALSO SHOWS AN AREA OF CLEARING AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT.
TEMPERATURES COULD BE DIURNALLY IMPACTED BY THIS CLEARING...ONLY TO
INCREASE INSTABILITY EVEN FURTHER. 12Z RAOB MEASURED 773J/KG OF ML
CAPE...WITH 120J/KG OF 0-3KM CAPE. SURFACE WINDS REMAIN BACKED AT
THE SURFACE...CREATING 0-1KM HELICITIES OF AROUND 400. NEARLY ALL
INGREDIENTS EXIST ACROSS SW MISSOURI FOR TORNADIC STORMS. ANY
STORMS THAT DEVELOP AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT AND WITHIN THE WARM
SECTOR WILL NEED TO BE MONITORED CLOSELY.

For one thing.... you don't want to be flying on the airlines from MSP to DFW.
:-))

Exactly. My brother and nephew are flying in from KMCI (Kansas City) to Dallas today, and DFW and DAL are currently under a ground stop for incoming flights. We're under a tornado watch til 2pm, and there is a squall line from south of Fort Worth to well north of Kansas City... directly on the front side of the cold front and east side of the trough. I'm sure those strong upper level winds are contributing to the instability that makes for favorable tornado conditions.

Tornado reported as being on the ground 30 miles south of us, about 18 miles north of the Arkansas border.

Question: does FlightAware only show weather after the flight departs, or is weather display broken on their site? Here's the view for my brother's delayed departure from MCI to DAL, and AviationWeather.gov's current radar display for that area:

Good grief Diana, you and Tom take care.

Haven't all y'all had just about enough wx problems this year?

Thanks Kevin. It looks like the dicey weather has passed now. I hope it is less vigorous by the time it gets to your neck of the woods.

Tomorrow might even be nice enough to fly here tomorrow. Yippeeeee. :)

Troy, in my limited experience, I believe FA shows the weather at the time of landing...YMMV

I was amazed at how fast the melt went and how much water came from it. I cleared the storm sewer outside where the flow was like a rapids.

At 2 am Saturday morning we had 60 degrees and my gutters were flowing and gurgling like mad. The lawn and driveway were about 1/2 clear of snow.

I just watched a "This Old House" where they said they had to handle the 4500 gallon(?) runoff from a once in 10 years 6 inch rainfall. They thought that was nuts. I guarantee that the runoff from that the melt of the 20 inches of snow we had on the ground was many times that.

Then we had some heavy rain Saturday.

Amazingly, there's still some snow piled up.
