How to issue a press release

Without going into details of why to avoid spin zone, apparently I need to issue a press release, but have no idea how.

Any clue guys?
You need to contact your local papers and get into the hands of the correct editor. It takes a little leg work but it is not that hard to get to the right place. What is much harder is to write the press release so that it is compelling, easily understood and easy for them to edit.

Look over a few press releases to get the feel for them.

Here is a link to the PR that was about me, it also ended up in literally a ton of newspapers associated with telecom, including ones in Russia.

If you want me to look over what you wrote let me know and I can offer my $.02

I'd think it would simply be a matter of faxing the statement to the various entities you wish to see distribute the information. Don't leave out various radio and TV shows and their hosts in the affected area. They are often your better option in case it comes up on the air as a talk subject.

Make sure to have people read the statement that are far removed from the situation. That's how the public is going to respond to it.

Who do you need to reach?

Prepare press release (or have it prepared), identify "target", send to appropriate media contacts at appropriate media outlets.

For example: "Nick of Albucrazy promoted to CEO of Skyhog Airlines, based in Phoenix" - would go to the business editor at publications/media in your local market, business editor at publications in Phoenix, and trade publications in the industry.

For Example: "Nick B. is marrying socialite Wadda Blonde" would go to the local "style" sections and the National Enquirer along with pictures taken by paparazzi.

For example: "Regardless of what they say, Nick is a great guy and didn't hold up that Circle K" would go to the news desks.

For publically traded companies/large companies, there is a service or two that folks use to release press info.

Cut to the chase Nick. The party should be able to assist you with a press release. ( this is not Spin) if you are not endorsed thats a different ball of wax. If you need some help call me at home between now and friday if friday call me in the office after friday call me at the office after Jan 4

If Nick is running for office the press release may not be the best way to get his views in the newspaper.

For local elections a better way is through the editorial page, write LOEs. Then also contact the local desks and get your opinion out to the jr. news people that cover local races telling them what you are going to do.

Get you talking points together and you keep repeating them. You will sound repetitious to yourself but the point is that you want those issues to be covered in your way, so do not try to adjust the words to fit the situation. A good talking point will not need to be adjusted.

Go to local places where you can meet people.

I spent the weekend before last at the train station doing meet and greets as I am running for reelection. Step one was signatures and this is a good time to also state what your accomplishments have been as well as telling what you are going to do. Again get it into a talking point sound bite form that takes no more than two minutes to get out. You only have a short time and you need to make an impression that is favorable.

As "we" used to say... any publicity is good publicity.

It was on the national news that there was a huge water main break in the DC area yesterday. Something like 9 cars were destroyed. By the end of the day a local car dealer was on the news offering loaner cars to all 9 owners. Couldn't buy the publicity....

Good luck, Nick, a lot of us here have had experience in the PR/media world. Scott has some great advice.

Nick,

As far as writing it, that's the tough part. For getting it out, you can probably reach most if not all of your local media outlets (TV/Radio/Newspaper) via addresses that are available on your web site.

Also, if you expect to want to do this more than once, you can set up a listserv so that they can subscribe, and/or put them on it. The one I remember in particular is pressrel@apple.com, I bet if you google that you can get a good idea of how they use it.

Scott,

I'm surprised - They missed out on a lot of important qualifications, like "willingness to eat deer penis."

And I would think that a Director of Wireless Broadband Standards would have too much things to do besides hang around on an aviation board 24x7. ;)
