It's a gorgeous 3 degrees, perfectly clear, and better yet, tomorrow is going to be another PERFECT flying day, hardly any wind (8-10kt at most), air like glass, runways are a bit icy and snow covered but no big deal (that's normal). I've had nothing but gorgeous days since that nasty warm 30 degree weather left and our nice DRY cold air came back! I flew Sun, Monday, and will fly tomorrow, I am on a big push for solo and the gosh darn weather better stay JUST LIKE THIS!

It's very cold. I was watching my 16-year-old son solo my 172 and it looked like a 180 climbing out in the chill air. And about 80% of the hangars haven't been open in months, so the traffic is light.

Where to start..... for the past two weeks it's been between -5 and 10 for the daytime highs.
Over the weekend I tried to fly, but the little cheap-ass portable engine heater had broken and even after stealing one from another plane and waiting around for a while, the engine still wouldn't start and my toes were going to fall off, so we gave up.
Everything's been cold-soaked for weeks.
Then, yesterday morning, it warmed up to about 35 and started raining.
This turned all the streets to perfectly smooth sheer ice.
People woke up and started driving. Accidents ensued.
All schools in the city were cancelled due to road conditions.
I waited for a bus which never came because it had slid off the street and was stuck at the bottom of a hill. So I walked four blocks (without friction) to a second bus stop and waited for another bus that never came. I walked to another bus stop. By this point there was enough water on the roads for trucks to douse me with puddle water as they passed. Two hours later, I staggered to work (which, like all the schools, was closed)
By the afternoon, the roads were a bit better. After dark, it began to snow again.
Yesterday sucked.
Today's going better, though. It was a perfect day to talk with my class about circular motion and friction and why racetracks are banked.

Oddly enough, it doesn't bother me anymore. I've mowed the lawn in 110 with no issues. Drink plenty of water, wear a light long sleeve shirt and a hat. Jump in the shower later. Not a big deal.woodstock said:let's compare notes in August.
And this is coming from a diehard snowmobiler, skier, icefisher, salmon fishing in 10 degree weather standing in a cold stream for 10 flippin' hours with only bathroom breaks, kinda guy.

It has been really "warm" where I am in Alaska, too! Today it was about +20 F, which was actually an improvement over the -35F of last week! I am about 8NE of Russian Mission at Kako (9AK2).
It was so warm the the boss tried to go out and start the 206 without preheating it at all. It flooded but didn't start....

Thanks. His first solo was shortly after his 16th birthday, in December (WX prevented him from soloing on his birthday). This was his third or fourth time up solo since that. He's got almost 40 hours total, but has to wait another 10 months to take the checkride so he's going to be doing a lot of flying! The other teen is right behind him
Hard to believe. When I was taking flight instruction in Colorado they were in diapers.

Here in Colorado, we have lots of snow in the mountains, but none here in Denver area. The golf courses have been busy and ven running there sprinklers. Most days are in the mid 50's F. Havne't had to use my Tanis heater yet.

Our weather's just fine, thanks! 18 degrees, just got back from a little AM skiing. We got about a foot of snow in the last few days, so it wasn't bad. Now I'm loading up the wood stove, and may actually work a little this afternoon.

Heck, my truck may well be one of them. I seem to have the need to do a LOT more business traveling to our Escondido office in July and August. Rather convenient that a decent campground is in Oceanside, a two minute walk from the beach and my 5th wheel follows me over.jkaduk said:

It's official, today was 83F. This is highly unusual not because it's in Feb but because we are immediately adjacent to that great temperature moderator, the cold Pacific Ocean. That dome of high pressure over UT/NV is our friend; as long as it stays in that area we will have high temps with calm winds. Airmet Tango in effect for mtn terrain.

That reminds me of a former employee who for weeks was razzing the guys that he was going to Cabo San Lucas for a week and they weren't. Finally, much to everyone's pleasure, the day came that he left for his wonderful week.
His flight was the last one in before they closed the aprt because of the approaching hurricane. Beginning that night none of the guests at his hotel were allowed to leave the grounds. The next morning none were allowed to leave the building. His 2nd night there in the wee hours an entire wall fell into the sea because of erosion undercutting the building. He had one of the rooms on that side of the building. In the confusion wrought by shrieking high winds, drenching rains, flooding, and no lights, it was hours before he was rescued from his room. By then it was daytime but certainly not much brighter. Most of the staff had fled and whatever food that could be found was waterlogged. The bar and the pantry were locked and protected by armed guard.
His 4th day he was able to bribe a taxi to take him to the aprt. (He never did say the amount of the bribe but I'm guessing it was sizeable.) The aprt was still closed but at least it was dry in the terminal. The fifth day he hopped aboard the first flight out. He lost much of his luggage and his prized camera. That afternoon the sun came out.
Back at work not a peep out of him. After several days, one of the guys couldn't stand it any longer and asked asked a lead in question: what was the name of the hotel you were staying at and did you hear about that hotel in Cabo that lost an entire wall?
Unbeknownst to him, we had all watched the devastation unfold on the nightly news.
