Sometimes I really get caught up in all the hustle bustle of things and don't seem to be able to relax well. I'm jealous of my Westie who seems to have it down pretty well <g>

So, how do you wind down and get all this stuff off your mind at the end of the day?

Best,

Dave

i try to lay on the couch just like that

Play softball 3-4 nights a week, then go out with the team afterwards at least one of those nights.

Ed's got a point--I do find that exercise helps... just going out for a walk can make a HUGE difference if I feel stressed.

Shoot people ...

in Project Reality (mod for Battlefield 2).

Climb in my glider and fly around for 3 to 8 hours going as far as possible.

When I'm REALLY needing a vacation it's best to land far away in some farm field where I don't really know where I am and have to walk and meet strangers, perhaps hitchhike, or loaf interminably waiting for rescue.

Since I haven't done either of the above for some time I suggest keeping your distance.

I'm plenty relaxed. I need the opposite advice. How do you light a fire under yourself?

Here's my Westie as super dog! Still looks relaxed though....doesn't he?

Best,

Dave

That's not a dog. That's a dog snack!!

If I can't hop in my sailplane I like to get on my road bike, point it in a cardinal direction, and turn around after a couple hours of riding. Great way to clear one's mind.

Waterskiing, of course! There was a time when my skiing drew out a handful of neighbors bent on preventing me from engaging in this activity on my lake (very similar to the idiots who move into homes next to an airport and try to shut it down) and during those years it was tough to reap the full relaxation benefit but things have been going smoothly for several years now. A set or two lasting 15-20 minutes each and taking me to near complete exhaustion along with the focus required usually just blows all other concerns away for a while.

A glass of wine in the evening

Sitting in a comfortable chair staring out the window.

Sending my kids to school.

I used to do that, too, just like Dave's Westie.

But then, Dave got a Restraining Order against me, and I'm no longer allowed within fifty feet of Dave's house (or his dog). :D

Lots of wine and a call from a kid.

A long walk will decompress you like you wouldn't believe.

I'll sometimes go to the gas station a just few miles away on the motorcycle to get gas even if it's nearly full. It usually takes at least 3-4 hours to get there and back and the tank is always empty after that for some reason.

The single most relaxing thing I do with any regularity, just a few times a year: Sit on the deck, alone, in the dark, on the island. Just stare at the rocks, get lost in my brain. Works like a charm.

On a semi-regular basis, a long bike ride out in the sticks. Long shower afterwards, it all works out.

A cocktail or a few vinos is nice from time to time, but not expressly relaxing. The company and the conversation (or the book/newspaper/magazine I'm reading) are also quite important.

I also find that I can make private time for myself in a new place, with a comfortable chair, a newspaper, and something delicious to snack on. A beverage also helps. Had a moment like that, last, sitting on the roof of a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last December.

Jessie and I take a "flog ourselves to death" vacation once a year. This year we did a wonderful trip to Paris, crushed the museums, ate where we wanted to, up daily at 7am, in bed at midnight, and just drank in the city. I came back more relaxed than most anything else can give me.

Cheers,

-Andrew

You bringing the pooch to camp?

He'd be terribly hot out there Wayne. He's a short duration outside fella this time of year; 'cept when he sees a rabbit. We saw three tonight. I had to drag him home; he'll be comatose until morning.

Best,

Dave

1) Flying
2) Motorcycle riding
3) Drive the Jag
4) Good glass of wine on the deck watching the sun set and talking to friends

He can sit in the shade with me if he decides he wants to come.

Work out at the Gym 6 days a week really balances my head out. and calms me other than that. Flying, Sailing and sitting outside just chilling

Set up the telescope on a clear night and do a little star gazing.

Reminds me how petty most problems are, even more so than looking down from 10,000'.

FWIW, the current forecast includes a high of 82/81 for Friday and Saturday.

I write an article for T&T. All I really have to do is sit down an think about the wrinkles in my last 30 medicals......it's pretty relaxing. And it reminds me, my problems are small.......

Amen to that. 30+ miles this evening and it's hard to not relax for a few minutes at least.

I was riding when you texted me Pete!

I never would've said this before if I hadn't experienced such great results, but now to de-stress, I go to the gym. No matter how stressed (or drained) I feel from work, within five minutes of being on the treadmill/bike/rowing machine, I've completely forgotten about what was bugging me. Sometimes, it seems as if my conscious mind has switched off, and my body just takes over the motions. I've read that very mindless, repetitive type exercise like this does allow the brain to relax.

As for true "relaxing" -- music.

Hawai'i. Seriously, there's nothing more relaxing in my book.

2x this year so far; I'm hoping to add 2 more. Apparently, there's a conference I could make a case for going to in Honolulu later this summer! :P

Meat on the smoker and a beer in my hand. Even if I'm doing book work, like now, have'n the smoker going and some beer is nice...........even better when the employees are busy and not f'n something up.

Brisket and pulled pork on the menu sometime this week to prep for harvest. ....bout a 14hr smoke......should take about 1- 30pk.....I better get two.

You , and Adam, have both made this observation, and I fully agree; on the days I start out with a nice workout, I think more clearly and get more done, and feel a lot better about it.
