Interesting film from the 1950's. I was surprised about the "air taxis" operated by individual owners... were these part 135 ops, or something else? It almost looked like just "normal airplane owners" providing transportation from airline hubs to smaller cities.

Oh, and check out the "costs to learn to fly" at 5:55 in the film. :)

Prior to the Buddy Holly crash in 1959 (IIRC) the charter rules were almost non-existent. In some less-traveled spots, like Longview, WA, some operators didn't get the word (or chose to ignore it) relative to new regs until much later--if ever.

I paid for such a charter trip down the Columbia gorge to Bend, OR in some guy's Mooney in the early 1970's (when I didn't know the rules either) that was the scariest trips of my life. That was the day I learned a lot about why the "your balls saved my life" ads contain an element of accuracy.

In their effort to improve the safety of the air taxi industry, the FAA has pretty much eliminated it. That either means it truly wasn't safe, or that the yoke of federal regulation eliminated a viable industry.

The air-taxi thing was afaik mainly run by the FBOs. They would have a Bonanza and one of the flight-instructors or the owner would fly small odd-job charters. Unconfirmed rumors tell me that there are some wild and wooly places where things are still handled that way. Just don't tell Ron Levy ;).
