Hope all of our POAers in NC fared ok in those horrible storms the other day. Tom sisk, Brooke, Nick, the others?

Still waiting to hear back from a cousin in Kernersville. I heard it was like nothing folks have seen there before

I'm doing fine, the tornado never touched my county, but I do hope that everyone near Sanford County is ok!

Copied/pasted from my post on the Purple board.
I am in NC (RDU- JNX area)and counting my blessings this morning. My brother works for Lowe's (an assistant store manager) and left the Sanford Store less than an hour before it was completely leveled (no fatality's thank goodness). He had returned to his store in Erwin just moments before a tornado came through the area of the store barely missing the store.
My sister was giving carriage rides in the Kenly/ Micro,NC area. She loaded up her horse and headed home abut an hour before the Tornado hit only to have her horse killed by a fallen tree. The barn is in splinters but her and and the house were spared. We now have to "get permission" to bury it this afternoon.
My SIL's sisters' In-laws had their house (located between Apex and Cary) totally destroyed by the twister that went through downtown Raleigh but escaped unhurt. Where I live, no damage but did record 45 mph winds and we had some hail for a very short time. The local news is reporting as many as 24 deaths in NC.

added: I should give Brook a call. the house in the above (sil's sisters' inlaws house) is about one mile from Brooks house. I hope she and her family fared okay. If I have anything to report, I will update this post later.

Lee county, home of Sanford (where the Lowes and the trailer park nearby were totally destroyed ) are reporting two killed.

Skipp, I'm glad to hear that you're safe. How sad that your sister's horse didn't survive, though. :(

Brook is OK... she will probably be on here later to give all the details. She has been having some technology drama lately as her parents are installing new hardwood floors and her computer availability has been off and on lately! More off. :(

I am fine. My brother had a hole in his roof and a tree on his fence. My 98 yo granny is still without power.

Lots of destruction around my area. Thankfully we never lost power. Which is odd because we are always one of the first, it seems, to do so.

My friend and I were at the roller derby and they sounded a tornado siren and everyone thought it was part of the derby. Then they made us all go to the basement. Then one of the Wake Co. Sheriffs Deputies told us to get on the ground and cover our heads. Crazy I tell you.

On the ride home we had to take lots of detours. Roads were flooded with cars completely submerged, trees down all over the place. We took one detour only to have to turn around and in less than 3 minutes that we turned around on one road...there had been a pretty bad head on collision.

The area that I use driving into work was totally flattened. Really bad. There is also a video out there of the tornado coming into downtown. I will post that later.

Went out driving today and took a few pictures. I will post them at some point.

Thanks for checking on us Adam. =) Well...we had a tornado (but not like this) hit overnight in 1988. Crazy. Then we had Fran in 1996...so we have seen destruction before. Just not this bad.

Skipp....Hope everything works out for your family.

I sent an e-mail to Mark and Agatha Shilling, who split time between Apex and Ocracoke
Island; too soon to have received any feedback.

I live maybe 2 miles from Mark and Agatha. It's really bad where they were. I think it touched down pretty much right there.

Here is a website with some pics from yesterday in Raleigh:

Thanks Diana, even though we lost a horse, we are felling very fortunate. It could have turned out very different if the t's were but a mile or two in any other direction. Some were no so fortunate. NC has had 20+ deaths and many are now homeless as a result of this mess.

This storm was a doozy. I was PAX on a Delta CRJ flight into Raleigh when the storm hit. We were put in a hold about 40NM west of KRDU. I don't know what altitude, but we were still high. Maybe 25-30K ft. Even at that altitude we experienced turbulence and IMC.

We were spared the brunt of the storm here. We got some nasty rain and some horrific winds, but it blew through here in about 20 minutes tops.

Feel bad for my neighbors to the east.

I note your reference to "where they were." I just received an e-mail from Mark which stated, "Thanks. We have moved to the mountains of NC so the damage around Raleigh was not an issue for us. Ocracoke was sold several years ago."

I just looked at the nav charts. We were holding on the Sandhills VOR near Pinehurst, which was my ultimate destination. I could have parachuted in! :D

Hah hah hah. NOT with those winds. You would have parachuted in you would have ended up in Raleigh anyways.

A coworker of mine (from Wake Forest) found someones bill, from Sanford, in her yard. Crazy.

I am OK, but I have no idea how the 210 and the house are. We were scheduled to fly from NC to Port Aransas TX on Fri morning, but bought commercial tickets on Thurs afternoon instead. We had an unevental ride on US Air on Fri morning, and are driving all over the state of TX this week.

No drama around here (Western NC) that I am aware of. I slept through it.

Looks like the hold was at FL200... What's amazing is the interesting speed pattern the hold created (look at the graph at the top of the track log). It's not a "fast one way slow the other" thing, though there were some incredible speed variations - But it does show a weird, distinct repeating pattern. Interesting!

I started my training at Wings of Carolina in Sandford. Hope they are OK. PIREPs will be greatly appreciated.

FYI, I talked to William Barnhill this evening, and he's fine. Far enough from the action that it seems it was a non-event. The previous weekend, however, he missed hail damage on the car more by chance than anything!

At one point in the hold we were making 126 Knots GS. In a Cessna that would have been about -16 Knots GS, which would have made for interesting hold leg timing. Dunno if I could have figured it out under pressure. Heck I dunno if I can figure it out now.
