Hold short, hold, hold, hold, hold, hold, hold ...

At least the controller should of extended their downwind to let him depart. I would of asked ATC to do that, or on the flip side, if I was one of those up in the pattern I would of offered up to extend

Been asked many times by controllers at my home drome to extend downwind to allow for a departure.

I hope not. It was routine but cordial exchange from the handoff from RFD approach to KJVL tower to parking, and the same when I called ground for taxing. I went through the full videos to see if I missed something that might have annoyed the controller. Didn't notice anything. And if he was "punishing" me for something, there was no reason to extend the punishment to the jet that was waiting behind me for 4 of these 7 landings.

As I said, this was more comical than annoying and my guess is that the controller, who was working all positions at the time, maybe got a bit busy with an unusual number of arrivals. I thought about contacting the airport manager saying listen, this is not a big deal but there was room between those 7 landings for at least one departure. In the big picture, I had no major reason to complain and that's why I turned the experience into a funny video to share with this group.

You don't want the airport manager, you want the air traffic manager. Full stop landings have priority over departures and both usually have priority over pattern work. I don't know what was going on in that tower so I'm not going to defend or chastise them but like I said, and judging strictly from that video, there was room to get you out of there.

I went back to my arrival video and it looks like the tower was really holding departures to give arrivals a wide berth -- a very wide one.

While I was into the 45 to join right downwind, a Citation jet advised the tower that they were ready to go. They were told to hold short for landing traffic: me. It took me another 5 minutes before I was even on short final.

By the time I was over the numbers, there were three aircraft waiting for departure, as seen in the attached frame grab from the video.

I am not going to second guess the tower's calls but at least whatever consideration was given to me on my arrival was also extended to those seven airplanes that landed while I was holding short for departure later that day.

Huh... Sho'nuff:

4−8−11. PRACTICE APPROACHES

Except for military aircraft operating at military airfields, ensure that neither VFR nor IFR practice approaches disrupt the flow of other arriving and departing IFR or VFR aircraft. Authorize, withdraw authorization, or refuse to authorize practice approaches as traffic conditions require. Normally, approaches in progress should not be terminated.

NOTE−

The priority afforded other aircraft over practice instrument approaches is not intended to be so rigidly applied that it causes grossly inefficient application of services.
