Historical pictures of Atlanta Airport

Wow. This gives me a new appreciation for the Lockheed Constellation. What a beautiful airplane!

Love the big fans inside:

For some reason, the head-on view reminds me of some kind of fish:

Only place I've seen a Connie in real life was at the airport in Lewiston, Maine where the guy's working on restoring a couple of them. They looked pretty sad though. :(

Reminds me of how old I am. I have been a passenger on a United DC-3, a Martin 404, and a Super Connie. Rode a TWA Connie from Kansas City to San Francisco on the way to Navy boot camp in 58. The Martin was a Piedmont in 69. The DC-3 was United's in the mid 50s Denver to Reno.

And all that without having to strip search first :D I'm envious, those were all great birds.

The Connies in Maine now belong to Luftansa and are being restored by them. You can read more about the project here.

As a current Atlantan I found those pictures fascinating. Thanks. When I was very young I flew a Connie cross country. Unfortunately I don't remember the plane, but I do remember buying a box lunch at Midway in Chicago on that trip. And regardless of that flight I still think the Super G Connie is the best looking airliner ever (SST a close 2nd).

As a kid, I rode in the back of Connies, DC-3, DC-6, DC-7, Convair, Martin 404, YS-11, Lockhed Electra, and a few others. The Connies were great...

And Scott, I still recall the smell of cigarette smoke in 72's, DC-8's and DC-9's.
It was kinda tough sitting in the front rows of coach whent he last rows of F were a smoking section.

Then again, I also remember when real film was used for the entertainment systems on planes, and I remember when AA used to have a video camera attached to the nose of the plane so you could watch takeoff and landings...

Since the smoke smell was everywhere I don't think anyone noticed back then.
I think that's true, at least for me. But now that I have experienced a world of non-smoking I would never want to go back.

That's it exactly. A decade or so ago with so many people smoking virtually anywhere you never noticed it. Now if I get on an elevator at work with a couple of folks heading back in from a smoke break the smell is incredible.

Same thing with dogs. If you have dogs in the house all the time you never notice the smell but if a friend comes over that doesn't have a dog he/she will most definitley notice it.

Most guys blame the dogs for the smell. Showers work better.
