First time in my short piloting career I've seen a TFR for model rocket launching:

http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_3_2397.html

I never noticed the sectional near 88NV, Black Rock NV, is charted for high power model rocket launches. Since the TFR only goes to 20,000 ft and lasts 3 days I assume it is for some model rocketeer event.

Edit: Must be launches by this group: http://www.aeropac.org/

I've seen that area on the sectional, but I don't remember seeing a TFR. Not sure how a pilot could see that going CC.

Those high powered rockets are way cool. My old Estes days were fun, but nothing like these things.

The do some big rocket launches just North of Ryan Field (Tucson), too. FAA NOTAMs up to 6,500 ft. Some of these are 9-10 feet tall. There has been some confusion on airspace issues around these launches... sometimes TFR'd, sometimes just NOTAM'd.

Those things at Blackrock are massive. You don't want to be hit by one. Some are similarly sized to the Standard missile.

There's also an annual launch event near Argonia, Kansas that gets a TFR. I had to go around it when I took the 'kota to Autopilots Central.

We have the same thing going on over by Akron Canton OH... Same TFR type and everything

This is part of the various speed events at the Bonneville Salt Flats. I think it's called Hellfire Week. More info here: http://www.uroc.org. I wast thinking of maybe taking the kids this weekend.

The local rocket club has a standing NOTAM for every third Saturday on the dry lake about 20 NM south of LAS. Normally just a 1 or 2 NM radius and up to 7500MSL (5000AGL).

Last month the NOTAM read 150000, I think the meant 15,000.

Launching from Gerlac on the Black Rock is serious, normally over 100,000 ft and it will land somewhere on the lake bed. YouTube searches will reveal some excellent space shots.
