but that FAA guy made me give him my plastic...

Oh well, maybe they'll send me a replacement with a few more letters..

Everything went ok today except for ATC was perplexed as to why I lined up for a DEN runway rather than FTG. Man, was it windy. Ok, that was a joke but the NDB approach was all over the place. It was just a tad windy.

Congratulations! That's one of the most useful things you can do. Welcome to the club!

A brave soul using the dreaded NDB approach!

Congratulations on your accomplishment! I'm about halfway through my rating, and I know how tough it is. My only NDB approach has been on MS Flight Simulator, since none of the planes I fly (thankfully!) still have an ADF in the panel!

Rock 'n' roll! Congrats.

On a NDB if the airport is somewhere in front of the airplane (within a 180 degree arc) when you look up, you've done pretty well.

And congrats on what many call the most difficult rating in an airplane.

Thanks folks. I'm really glad to have the check ride done and now I can get into the good part of the learning.

And hey, NDB approaches aren't that bad - ya jus' gotta keep'em in perspective. My standard unit of measure on the NDB is one county. If I'm in the same county as the beacon then it's all good. :D Of course that rarely happens so I've added a half county for the "acceptable" category.

Of course when the examiner isn't around I've got a portable GPS with geo-referenced plates for situational awareness so I'm not too worried about terminal navigation. Learning to do everything on steam gauges, needles and spotty radar coverage was a good challenge though.

LOL.

Congratulations, Clark. Truly a great achievement.

Congrats!! When I first read the thread title, I thought you had figured out how to fly west instead of east. :D

Maybe I shoulda used something along the lines of filing for the thousands and not the fives? Oh well, just call it an NDB approach for a catchy title since it was sorta in the direction I wanted to go but I didn't quite get there.:)

As for flying on a westerly heading, well, ummm, I still don't do much of that. Those big ole piles of ancient rocks out there are just a little bit of a nuisance. I'll catch the COPA mountain/high altitude course on the 20th of this month and go from there.

You're lucky you have an ADF that picks up an NDB. Before I yanked mine in the Cherokee, the ADF was only good to about 2 miles from the NDB.

Congrats and have fun with the rating.

Congrats! Out of the four checkrides I've done so far, the instrument and the CP-AMEL-IA were the hardest. The only reason for the CP-AMEL-IA being hard was that the examiner basically had me redo my IR ride... with an engine failure. I was quite ready for a beer afterwards.

The IR is the best rating I've gotten so far. Hope you put yours to good use!

Awesome! Another Instrument pilot on the board! Good job! Will you be posting your checkride story in detail? I always enjoy reading those.

I don't know if I can do the checkride story justice. It's a tangled tale in four parts which include a broken airplane, a DPE who may be slightly rogue (or is it just the onset of Alzhiemer's?) , a total screw-up by the applicant on a VFR portion, and finally a pass and a recommendation to go CP & CFI.

Sounds like a perfect story. Love to read it!

I think I'd have to have an 18 year old or two to write it...:skeptical:

That's an 18 year old whisky.
