Henning's Odyssey

Henning just awoke from his slumber. The next leg in his Big Adveture is about to begin.

O God, please don't let me **** up. Amen

In LA? You.ve got to be kidding, I'd end up with hepatitis and a crack addiction...

Ok. That post got me busted for reading the Board at work..hard to stifle the laughter!

Well looks like Henning and Richard have not landed and established an Internet connection so here's the current status from my end.

As you have seen Henning had internet access here at Chez Joe

We met Richard at El Monte (KEMT) for lunch before launch:

Sent them on their way to Lost Wages in Richard's trusty steed. Weather was well adequate. I can't wait for the details.

I do have to say Henning is the same in person as he is on the web. A real nice guy with LOTS of good stories about flying and sailing. Thanks Henning for stopping by, you're welcome anytime.

It was a pleasure I assure you. Well, I'm in Vegas sitting in a warehouse watching my friend of 20 years whom I met as an abused 17 year old runaway now running a warehouse for one of the biggest construction projects going on in the states (City Center) as a General Forman for Southland Industries, one of the biggest construction companies in America. It's funny to watch these guys tremble when she yells at them. You can see they're afraid of her. If they only knew....

Well Richard and I had a beautiful flight to Vegas coming through the Cajon Pass at a level where we could wave at the trucks through their windows to stay under a deck which opened up right after the pass. There were some thunderstorms that we had to divert for so the trip took a bit longer than expected, but it was under a beautiful full moon sky so you could still see the terrain a few hundred feet below. I'd imagine Richard is hitting Havasu about now. Thanks for the ride Richard, it was fun. I have a few pictures to post but I forgot my chip reader doodamajiggy in Aus, so it will have to wait till tommorrow or so. If there's one at the house, I'll do it there.

I'm in the FBO at Lake Havasu right now. I waited a couple hours at Henderson before I launched for here. That line of T storms was still prowling around my route and I didn't fancy the thought of finding a growler at night over the black terrain. God's gift was a full moon on an absolutely clear night. Not a cloud anywhere. I pulled the power back and turned off the lights to loiter under the night sky.

Henning, it was a pleasure to meet and fly with you. I'd fly with you again in a heartbeat. I told you it was a POS. And it was nice to meet Joe again, as always.

100LL $3.36 @ KHND until they fix the SS pump.

Sh*t, I wish I would have known, we could have hit the Casinos for a couple of hours. Well, it was fun flying with you, always good to have a laugh. I'll ride in your POS anytime, beats a bicycle... I was getting a bit concerned when you hadn't posted by late.

Wow, looks like I picked the wrong month to stop reading PoA! (actually, work is killing me  )

So, when's this party swinging by Atlanta? Lance F's homebase is only 20nm south of mine (LZU) and we've got a burger joint on the field...

I'm only 17miles from Lance, by air and less by car. I'll keep watching for the "first coming of Henning".:)

Ok, finally here's a couple pics from the trip:

It really was a beautiful evening

I haven't done much yet. Just getting the body clock back in synch and catching up on South Park.

...and you gotta get used to the draining sink, bathtub, and toilet water swirling in the opposite direction.

About the first thing I did when I got to Australia is go into the hotel bathroom and flush the toilet. Surprise! The toilets are designed differently and the water goes straight down... no swirl. :hairraise:

Big disappointment! We almost went home.....

Henning, I hope this isn't an indication of how much fun people have when they fly with you. ;)

Remember, Henning DID have lots of burritos the night before. Do CO monitors warn for that?

I was prepared. With the door seal missing and the carpet pulled to let air in from the fuselage there was a good constant flow of fresh air.

Too bad that 1st pic is a close up. With a wide angle lens you would've seen we were in a steep spiral. In fact, that was our flight attitude the whole way; it was the stormy updrafts which kept us aloft.

Yes, Diana, you'll have fun too when you get your turn at him. But beware, if he preflights your craft like he did mine you'll think you need an annual before flying again. His preflight was more comprehensive than many annuals I've seen. Dang know it all pax, now I have AIC (Airplane Inferiority Complex). I'm gonna' charge him next time to cover for all the abuse.

Ahh, it wasn't that bad, I just pointed out a few wear issues...

Forget the airplane; I'll worry about the wear issues for the pilot.

This one is well worn but still within critical tolerances. Couple of dents and a bit ragged around the edges. Shows some signes of hangar rash and general abuse. Definite damage history but most repairs were well executed. Occassionaly operates with speed tape patches but generally handles and performs well. Pretty reliable in a pinch.

I'll attest to that. There was a moment on our flight while commencing our arrival to the destination. Let me congratulate Henning for stepping up to the plate. That kind of positive control is the hallmark of experience and skill.

Well, once again an AME has certified that this pilot is still fit to fly and has issued me a fresh second class medical. Tommorrow morning I do my BFR in a Citabria at North Las Vegas with some aerobatics guru. I'll review inverted spin recovery and a couple other things so we'll be good to go Diana.

Cool! I hope you have fun tomorrow. While you're at it, would you mind asking him/her about hints or suggestions for short people flying from the back?

so we'll be good to go Diana.
I'm getting the parachutes repacked now, so we'll be all set when you get here. :)

Well, I've been inspected by a CFI, and have been found fit by him as well, so I am now legal to act as PIC even in Tailwheel aircraft. Fresh Med & BFR. As an aside, recoverys were natural and automatic upright and inverted. I bounced my first wheel landing and had to turn it into a three point, but outside that one, the rest were all good. Weird landing such a short airplane again.

As for tips from the back seat Diana, he basically said what I did, keep your head forward and use periferal cues.
