There are veterans that need help. The owner of this sign is not one of them. I found this sign cleaning out a rental of ours. The owner was neither a vet nor homeless. He was living in a nice rental, paid rent on time, always current with utilities, and other bills. When he pulled a knife on his girlfriend he went to jail. This is when I found out he had killed his sister 35 years earlier (for reading a bible to him) and spent 30 years in the regional mental health center. He is not a veteran, unless you count his war on women. ;)

My point is, don't give money to bums on the street, they are all scammers. If you want to help veterans in need gob bless you! Give money to homeless shelters, veterans groups, and food banks. They can best help veterans who truly deserve a helping hand.

One day I saw a poorly dressed man holding a sign like the one pictured. It was sun down and after I passed him he folded his sign and picked up a little plastic shopping bag that was next to him. I watched him as he then walked across the parking lot and stepped into a very nice diesel pusher motor home.

About 20 years ago I read an article in an Orlando (Fl) newspaper about people begging for money. Several of the anonymous "bums" were quoted as to be making more than 60k tax free per year.

I live in a small town on an east west interstate. I always see people parked on the side of the business route through town holding signs, "Please help, need gas." Or "Stranded need help." Or just plain "Hungry." I told one guy if he will follow me into this restaurant I will purchase his meal and then I will leave. Nope, just give me the money and I will buy it. Just about every day in summer people come to our church claiming some disabling medical problem and need money to travel to California where medical help is waiting. The preacher will tell them we will help you but I would like for you to step inside my office so we can talk. Not very many people take him up on his offer.

And then on Sunday afternoons the indians will be loitering in the parking lots looking for money for food, because they spent all their federal money on drugs and alcohol.

I am pretty calloused to it. I will hold up my hand and say no before they even have a chance to ask. My wife feels bad for them, I guess because she came from a third world country. I have been in countries where poverty is just terrible. And their governments do nothing to help.

Most of the local churches in towns and cities operate local food banks. However, food banks are going empty because people no longer donate.

I have charities that I donate to monthly, and the company does the same. I will only donate after I find out how much money is used to pay themselves compared to how much is used for help.
 
When I lived in NYC, there was a guy around the corner from me, on the 60th and Columbus corner. He had the sign, Homeless, veteran etc.

After I've seen him there way too often I got bored and told him he should atleast ditch the iPhone 5S if he wants to act homeless.
 
I know where you're coming from. I've seen tons of people standing outside stores like Walmart. I don't know what other places are like but food and clothing are probably not an issue in lincoln. Over the past few years, they've done an excellent job of puting food bank barels in our grocery stores and clothing pick up stations at many store locations. The barels were full at one place this morning and after weekend yard sales I see the pick up stations overflowing. If you're naked and starved in lincoln, it's probably your own fault. There is even a barrel to help homeless pets which I thought was awesome. In my opinion, there needs to be more programs to encourage help with addictions and mental/physics challenges. We do however lack affordable and descent housing based on minimum wage.

But hey if you are starving, I will make you a sandwich. I'm just not giving money for alcohol and drugs.
