Flying thru Orlando class B, from Ft. Pierce, I heard a loud crazy noise,,, checked all gauges, instruments, all ok, but the noise was very loud.

I did not declare an emergency, but told Orlando ATC I have a loud noise and got to get down, please clear me to nearest airport.

The ATC very calmly advised me what airport and heading, they cleared the traffic for me and I made a safe landing in Melborne. God bless good ATC's.

After a lot of inspections and test with airport AP's, the source was a metal strut wind deflector came loose on one side and was flapping in the wind, what a hell of a noise. Finished taking it loose and went on back flying.

Yes, I soiled my drawers.... nuff said

Happened to me last year. I'd moved and gone ahead of the wife, then went back to bring the plane down. Cruising along fat and happy at 9500 msl, back end full of stuff.

Loud bang! Checked everything, no draft, all instruments normal, still straight and level. Looked around, one of the two family size bags of potato chips behind my head blew open . . . Naturally, it was the one I couldn't reach, the bottom of the bag, and they spilled out onto the parts of my shirts (loaded on the hangers) that were poking out the bottom of the too-short kitchen trash bag covers.

Ate a lot of chips the next couple days, in addition to the ones I threw out. Kept finding chips in the plane for several months.

One flight a strap end from my backpack/computer bag got shut in the door. It was amazing how much noise that strap made flapping against the plane at cruise speed. At first I didn't know what was going on. I have not made that mistake again.

BTDT. Not very loud, but it sure sounded like a misfiring cylinder.

My pack has plastic rings on the strap ends. That plastic ring made a heck of a noise banging against the fuselage. Fortunately it was one of my shorter flights.

I had a section of the seal around my windscreen come loose. When not flying it laid flat and was undetectable that it had separated from the surface. But in flight, especially during a climb, it would vibrate rapidly against the windshield and make this buzzing noise.

It was my buddy who diagnosed it by putting the plane in different pitch attitudes. Tore that piece off and buzzing noise disappeared.

Wait till you have a seat belt hanging out the door, that's another interesting one because it usually starts banging like hell right as you are lifting off.

My door latch failed in flight and the door smashed against the underside of the wing. It was deforming so I landed on a dirt road just as a pick-up truck turned onto the rd and changed my landing to a touch and go.

Next landing was on a runway.

Wait until you fly with 2 CFIs in the plane and one of them leaves their keys in the passenger side door and you fail to notice on your final walkaround. No idea what that noise was, but Tower seemed much more concerned than I was flying the pattern to come back to land.

A friend of mine did that in a learjet. It ended as you might expect. A one engine landing. Not good.

Did that in training once. I knew immediately what it was. My instructor took the controls, pulled up to about Vx, told me to open the door (C-172) and pull it in. I did. no big deal. But it was startling. And I obviously missed the "seatbelt and shoulder harness secured" on the checklist that time.

Similar story - Just had a cylinder replaced a couple of weeks earlier, and had done the break in flights, but was heading out for a long weekend with the wife to Memphis. Was paying a lot of attention to the sound of the engine, oil temps, EGT, etc for the duration of the flight (~3 hrs), so that was in the back of my mind.

Was descending from cruise to pattern alt when a terrible banging got my attention....I could feel the vibration in my gut.....oh crap....I just lost the cylinder or something. Started my best glide, running checklists, etc, and it stopped. Seems my wife leaned forward to pick something off the floorboard and the headset junction (hard plastic Y connector) got caught in the floor air vent and was rattling. She sat up straight when I said "something's wrong with the engine" and it stopped.

We still giggle at it today, but at the time, it was quite serious......

When flying solo as a student, I was doing some touch-n-goes and suddenly a loud banging noise became evident from the bottom of the fuselage (floor).
Asked another pilot in the pattern whether my gear seemed alright and (from afar) he said that it did not look wrong or anything. But I already had an educated guess in my head, hoping that it was just the wing root seal that came loose and was hitting the fuselage.

Made my next landing a full-stop, was curious about how she will handle on touchdown. It was a non-event (fortunately). Taxied to parking and sure enough, found the gap seal hanging from the gap. Whew. :)

Yeah, had that happen with a fuel cap that didn't get screwed on well enough. Happened after rotation. A bit scary...

I heard a loud buzzing noise while on the LPV approach into MYF, didn't change pitch or volume with the throttle or airspeed, so my CFII and I blew it off as nothing. Big mistake, after we shut down there was a rather large (turkey platter) size puddle of oil by the nosewheel and oil streaked down the side of the plane. It turned out part of the heater muff rubbed a hole in the oil pan (WTF!?!). If you're familiar with where MYF is, there's not a whole lot of forced landing spots near there....

Stainless Steel is harder than aluminum so any chafing will erode the aluminum. Why the hell it was touching is a whole different matter though.:nonod:

Yeah, that's what i was thinking when the mechanic told me what was up. Never flew that plane again

A number of years ago we were having trouble with the seal on the door to the club's Arrow. That makes a heck of a racket when it is banging on the outside of the plane while flapping in the breeze. Sure glad it is properly glued down now.
