Talk about nature's fury. Reminds you that we're really just borrowing this rock.

There area around the mountain is amazing. I first went there many years ago and it reminded me of those moon photos, "magnificent desolation" as Buzz would say. I picked up several 'new' rocks too. I still have them, it is not often that you know the birthday of a rock and it is younger than yourself.

RIP David A. Johnston

Did you know him? I was living south of Seattle at the time, and remember the day well.

Here's a picture of Dave, on the north side of the mountain, on 5/17/1980; he died, along with 56 others, the next morning. RIP.

We lived in Denver at the time. Had a dusting of ash the next morning.

I was living in Boston. When the ash got to us the only thing I noticed was that the smog was a different color (yellowish).

No, but I know/knew of him.

The Family and I were setting in G/ma house in Utica Ny. when we heard the news, we were wondering if we could get home to Oak Harbor.

driving back the first ash we saw was Spokane blowing up behind the truckers.

Once we were east of Omak we were OK.

We lived Sunnyside, WA at the time, about 100 miles away. The sky went real dark and there was ash everywhere. Exciting for a 7 year old, but a real pain for the adults...

August 2008:

Looking into the caldera from the north side:

Something I didn't expect - Tons of wood still floating in Spirit Lake (all that stuff to the left of the strut is floating wood):
