I would like to put a security camera inside or outside of our hangar. We have electricity but no phone/wifi. Has anyone used or can recommend a cellular security camera?
 
Also consider a Game camera from Bass Proshop, etc. used for taking pics of animals in the woods.

These cameras have infrared night vision, run for weeks on batteries or plug in, and store both pics and video based on motion detection. Easy to hide.
 
Game cameras are a good (and inexpensive) idea, but wouldn't provide immediate notifications or alerts of a breakin or unauthorized visitor. If you want to know if someone has entered your hanger, consider a SimpliSafe system (or something like it) with their add-on camera. It's cellular enabled with WiFi as optional. The system can alert without notifying police and the camera activates. The camera has excellent low-light visibility.

Buy the black Blink XT2 cameras
Get a 4g hotspot, usually $10/month.
Connect cameras and you have video security for about $170 and the monthly fee.

We also like the hotspot because the tablets (not 4g) pull latest internet wx while we load up the plane.

You can also take it with or move it around. On overnights we grab the hotspot and keep it in the plane to be able to pull internet wx wherever we land.

So far our family (3) has survived on a 2GB data plan including this setup.

Another bonus of this setup is wireless plane preheating. Just turned it on last night for my flight review this afternoon.

Downsides to blink are they are slow and live video isn't great. But more than adequate to see a person, door open, etc.

Actually, these days game cameras can be setup to transmit images or video over cellular networks. Verizon is the network I used recently when a friend was dealing with trespassers and poachers on their land.

You get the images sent real time to a cell phone app or email address. Quite inexpensive and easy to setup. Maybe a good solution until you get a more thorough system in place.

I concur.

I have SimpliSafe for my house. Low cost month to month payment, no super loooong term contracts, actually no contracts at all. I have it set up to notify me by text whenever the alarm is armed or dis-armed, and if the alarm is set off, I get a text message from the alarm followed by a phone call from the company asking if they should send the police.

SimpliSafe can also be set up to text when the door is opened even if the alarm is off. There is a battery back up so if the electricity goes off it still works. And it also sends me a text letting me know the electricity is off, and again when it comes back on.

You can have codes for different folks, like your mechanic. If he dis-arms the alarm you will get a text saying ''System Disarmed. Your SimpliSafe security system was disarmed by (mechanics name) at (hangar address) on (date) at (time)'' letting you know the mechanic is in your hangar.

I don't have the camera because I do not have full time internet connection so I don't know about that. As NordicDave suggest, a simple game camera like linked below might work.

Just clicked off a picture from eack blink camera. About 5 seconds for each one. Has video and 2-way audio but never use it. Loving our great hangar door seal...not...but actually it's not that bad just looks worse with the high contrast of the sunlight. Pictures look nearly identical at night since it has a decent IR illuminator.

While my house was under construction, someone kicked in a door to try to steal tools. (Joke's on them, my contractors were so bad that there weren't any tools to steal.) I bought two game cameras and put them in what I thought were adequately discrete locations in the house. Then someone climbed 10 feet up onto the raised deck, slid open the unlocked door into the house, and tried to steal tools. They again found no tools, but they did steal both game cameras.

Moral of the story: Game cameras work for game because deer don't have thumbs. If your security cameras don't store data off-site or at least send a picture to you when something happens, they are not security cameras.
 
Ours push directly to the cloud and then sms afterwards so no local storage.

A few more thoughts about a hotspot + generic stuff solution. I bought a small NEMA like enclosure from Amazon and I also bought a external antennae for the hotspots. Different hotspots have different antennae options. Anyhow, we put the hotspot and blink hub in the enclosure along with a standard USB wall wort to power them both. If you want you can get creative and plug all the stuff into the hotspot since it has a pretty good internal battery. We had a reset issue with ours so don't currently run it that way. I started with one camera. Later when I bought a 3-pack from home I used two and very quickly added the leftover to the hangar for another view.

Perhaps the best thing has been the wifi remote power switch. I found one that also gives you live Watts, Amps, Voltage. In our case our Tannis always draws just like in the image below. If it ever reads zero I will know I forgot to plug it in or something is wrong. About $35. So no need to also have a light that gets turned on and have to use a camera to verify the switch is actually working.

The thing that surprised me the most was that hot spot and the blink's worked on our coldest day. The outside air temp was about -37F and they all still worked! It is a bit warmer in the hangar as its out of the wind but there is no heat the building we are in and its just galvanized steel walls with no wall or ceiling insulation. My plan B was to put a very small USB power bulb in the enclosure but didn't end up needing it yet.

Looks like we plugged it in the most during March. Nice to look at the TAF's. See a nice flying day. Open a app and click a button and have confirmation it is drawing power. Next step would be to have some type of battery powered wifi temperature sensor under the cowling but knowing my luck it would get stuck in the engine!.

Get a 4g hotspot and throw up some Wyze cams, and an outlet or two for pre-heat, etc. I also have a door sensor.

www.wyze.com you can't beat it for the money.
 
There are game cameras with built in cellular and next to free plans, go check out bass pro

That said, I’d check with your local PD before you spend the money, lots of departments won’t bother with property crimes even if you have them dead to rights on video.

Amen to that. We have a security system for our house, but it's solely to make the burglars think twice. The county sheriff's office has told us that they do not respond to alarms or calls from alarm companies. Too many false alarms.

Sucks you have to pay them when they don’t do their job. I’d wager they’ll be right quick if you park on a red curb, go 15mph over or something though

I think solutions with a hotspot give the most flexibility. They come in at $120/yr.

@MarkH: What would a year of pre-paid cost? You could also turn the older phone into a hotspot!

@denverd1, @sourdough44, @ktup-flyer: What is yearly cost for the Game Cameras that can send over 3G/4G?

@Zeldman: What is the SimpliSafe yearly cost is when only run on 3G/4G (no broadband wired internet)?
 
Our setup was around $299 with a camera, that way I can make sure she isn’t out after curfew. We do have internet in the hangar so our monthly is only $25, I thought they had a cellular plan and I am pretty sure ours is on cellular backup.

What hotspot plan are you looking at for $120/yr? If you have Verizon already, and they will let you activate the phone as a tablet, then they offer a $10/month unlimited (15G deprioritized). Otherwise, T-Mobile offers a 2GB 4G/Unlimited 2G for $10/month.

I would bet they find time to cash their paychecks. Sounds like a new sheriff is needed.

yep, based on data used. I think I paid $15 per for a fairly low volume of data.

Yes I currently have a Verizon dedicated hotspot that has a $10/month access fee. A phone line access fee would be higher so an actual hotspot is cheaper than using a phone as a hotspot.

Given the budget, the number of officers and the number of other things they have to investigate, this isn't particularly surprising.

Now, if I could just get city workers going down to the neighborhood lift station to quit butchering my wife's lilac bushes at the gate to the dock.
