So there I was in the medical office waiting room (again). It's always something.

This time as I stared off into space the security guy from the hospital came in, walked up to the reception desk and whispered. They whispered back. He headed out the door to the elevator. A minute later he and about 6 guys walk in and head to all corners of the room.

Then He came in surrounded by 4 girls. He smiled at everyone. He talked softly. They sat down in the waiting room for barely a second before they were shown to an office. One of the guys stood at the door. 2 guys stood at the entrance to the hall. One guy stood outside at the elevator. I heard the one guy mention they would be in the garage. When I was led back the two guys were sitting monitoring the hallway.

There were three more downstairs in the building lobby when I left.

This guy was in the news and was mentioned even right 'cher.

Who wazzee?

Mayor Daly?

Jimmy Hoffa?

Naw, it was Mayor Daley. You should have asked him about all the security threats represented by 2500 lb airplanes flying out of Meigs Field.

I'll give a hint. What surprised me most was the way the bodyguards were dressed. They were all in casual jackets and sneakers.

In the old days they dressed a lot more formally.

I was gonna post a link but that would give it away.

The girl thing is throwing me for a loop.
Clinton, Bill I mean.

As soon as you mentioned that dress thing he popped into my head. About 10 years ago I was up in Milwaukee working that weekend and the hotel I was in was filled with his followers. I was getting back to my room and the elavator doors were closing so I jumped in and there were a bunch of guys dressed up with their special suits and the Rev. himself. I said hi and struck up a conversation which basically consisted of 'what are you guys in some sort of club' questions and what did they actually stand for. He was pretty nice to me. His body guards were cautious.

And you didn't take a shot?

I couldn't tell that the guys were packing but I'm sure they were.

I acted like I didn't know who he was.

I debated for half a minute if it was Farrakahn or Herbie Hancock. Not likely to be Herbie. :D

You should have asked one of the body guard 'is that Herbie Hancock?' That would have ruined their whole day.

Now that your "secret" is outed, something similar happened to me a dozen years ago. It was a warm summer day and my camera store was busy, perhaps 10 customers in the store and none of whom I knew. Passing by the street front display windows was a baby carriage, the lady pushing it, a 7 year old, a gentleman, and two other guys in sports jackets. The gentleman looked in and gave me a wide wave to which I responded with a similar wave. One of the customers said:
"Someone you know?"
"Yes, it's the Governor and his family."
"Sure it is."
"Yes, it is; they live right up the street." (The governor elected to not live in the governor's mansion, thereby taking their children away from their normal surroundings)
"Sure they do."

"Oh; on my desk are some pictures I took at the inaugural ball. If you folks will hold the fort for a couple minutes I'll be right back." I grabbed my favorite of the collection, headed out the door, and came up behind the group just as they had crossed the side street. I walked to the left of the lady, held out the photo and said, "Hey, Mary; is this anyone you know?" To which she replied, "Oooh, that's a good one."

Well, when I first held out the photo for Mary those two guys in the sports jackets spun around as I spoke. To her reply I said, "I have a whole bunch more on my desk; and she came back with, "Oh, good; drop them by the house; you know where we live."

At that point the two big guys -- the Maine State Police security detail -- relaxed their stance and figured I was OK. Governor Angus King later told me it took his body guards quite a while to get used to the fact that Angus and Mary, not holed-up in The Blaine House/Governor's Mansion(in Augusta) could just walk down their hometown street and most of the residents would know them on a first-name basis. I printed-up a 16 x 20 and took it and the rest of the 4 x 6 prints to their house, as directed.

Herbie! I know your friend from U of C! It looked like Wayne Shorter was blitzed out of his mind at Ravinia...! Oh. :D:

Was it only Elijah who had all of those guys in the bow ties and funny hats with FOI on them? Louie did change a lot of stuff when he took over and ousted Wallace Deen? I haven't paid attention to how the entourage looks these days.

LOL!! I would have asked him to explain again to me the whole "A-tone" speech, and if he had that written for him or he was just dosing on especially good acid that day.

I recall back in the early 80s .. my ex and I went to a movie. We're
sitting there before the movie and the governor and his wife came
in an sat down beside us. I asked my ex to go get treats. He
asked his wife to go get treats. Then we laughed about how nice
it was to have someone to wait on us.

Nope, Farakhan has them too.

Many years ago I was seeing off my cousin and her beau from Meigs when Gov. Thompson's plane landed. At the time his wife, Jane was carrying their baby girl. She tottled off to the the laides room while he read the headline on the Chicago Tribune, "Gov does something..." through the cover of the paper box. He came over and talked to us and asked where they were from. "CLEVELAND!???"

I asked if they were impressed we got the governor out to meet them.

As I recall he had only one or two plain clothes state troopers with him.

Our current Governor thinks he's a rock star. Hardly ever travels with less than a half dozen state police security guys/gals. What a waste! And the security detail is wasteful too.....

But it's less (more?) of a problem since Blago won't move to Springfield. He actually lives in my Mom's neighborhood.

Reminds me of a story that happened to me personally. Back when I lived in West Virginia I used to work in the same building that the wife of the then Governor Gaston Caperton worked. She usually had a security detail that consisted of 2 or 3 state police officers with her at all times.

One morning I was running rather late for work and as I ran down the lobby towards the elevators I noticed one was closing and I jumpped in with the doors closing behind me. Well, two of the state police officers basically corralled me into a corner (giving the first lady the rest of the spacious elevator). When I got to my floor and I was getting off the elevator one of them reminded me that, for security purposes, that in the future the first lady is to ride alone...

Not long after that they divorced and the security detail disappeared...

Thompson basically lived in Chicago as well. He moved most of the real State of Illinois office to the State of Ill. building. He too traveled between Springfield and Chicago a lot. I am not sure about other governors. It makes sense for them to stay up in Chicago as it has a better transportation system and is where the majority of business is. The only reason the capital is still in Springfield is to placate the southern Illinoisers.
