Green with envy

So a buddy of mine just bought this: Man, I'm drooling.

Didn't you used to have a Cherokee 6 or similar? That 'toga looks sweet.

Wow. That is nice. I like the Togas, especially with TC. That would be a nice plane for out here in CO.

"Toga, Toga, Toga!"

I had a 77 straight tail Lance for a few years. 1430-pound useful load and 155 knots.

Seems to me that this "buddy" needs a few rides in the Citabria to get hooked on acro (so you can swap time in airplanes).

It sure is pretty and new; lots of nice panelities. But for the asking price - man you could get a whole lot more airplane.

Shoot...I bought a nice house and a plane for less than that...the plane goes almost as fast and burns a lot less fuel....the house is bigger than the plane. :<)

and to be sure; I wasn't criticizing ken's friend - everyone has their own idea on what airplane/price match is great for them, but for the same price or less there are some very capable older planes available, many of them twins, some turbine:

mmmm nice :)

Always thought these looked neat. Pretty new eng/props

a 421...

OK he'd have to budget for some R&R but its a jet!

As for the Hawker...the annual costs would certainly match or exceed the aquisition. I could better afford to operate the Saratoga...if someone would just give me one :-)

Wow!
Seriously this is a type of plane that i dream of someday owning. That is just awesome looking.

I always wondered how well that entertainment center 5 seat option was going to go over.

That interior picture looks just like what I remember from the magazine articles.

Aw, Ken, sounds like you miss that plane. :(

Maybe your bud will take you on as a partner?

He sold a nice Turbo Aztec to buy this. He's gone the older twin route (twice) and it ate his lunch (both times). He's hoping the newer plane will make it easier to stay on top of the maintenance curve. And since he's not on this board, I can say it ... I've known this guy for more than 10 years and have always worried slightly about his continuing proficiency in twins. Perhaps he has come to that realization as well.

Fortunately, I talked him out of a Malibu. But for some reason he wouldn't even consider an A36. Shoulda introduced him to Chip -- or rather, Chip's Bonanza.

I think my days as a Citabria owner are numbered. Fun as it is, as much as I like Four Alpha Charlie, I gotta work on something more practical. Too bad my friend lives in a couple hundred miles away.

There are so many compromises we have to make in aviation, aren't there.

Ha! You crack me up. Here you are whispering Pitts Pitts Pitts in my ear while you're secretly plotting how to get back in a spam can...

I'm still debating what to buy, good thing I have another year to go before I purchase...some time to fly more things.

Enjoy where you are right now, Bill. Fly everything you can!

Ken,

I've been thinking about forming a group of several pilots to purchase an older Cherokee 6 or Cessna 205...the idea would be that most if not all of the pilots in the group would have access to another plane that the shared plane would be their station wagon or practical aircraft as the case might be....for me I'm trying to work it so I can keep the Mooney but get through the time period where the kids will be too scrunched in the back seat...

Doncha know? When your lottery numbers come in, you gotta have at least two!

Two cars: a two seater rocket sportscar for sheer fun and a luxury coupe for practical hauling and serious travel.
Two planes: A aerobatic open cockpit bi-plane for sheer fun and a 6 seater (or jet) for for practical hauling and serious travel.

And THEN add a Robinson R24 or bigger helicopter for the daily commute to work. ;)

:cheerswine:

The hardiest guys at my home base with the 450HP Stearmans only fly them about 8 months a year. Most of them don't have any other plane. They just camp out in the heated hangars the rest of the time.

That's what it would take, too! Fun to dream.

But, I am having fun renting the club planes, I'd just like to be able to go away for a full nice weather weekend at the drop of a hat. I'd also like to do loops and rolls and spins...I'd also like to fly a taildragger....ugh. :dunno:

I've been trying to do that for five years, Len. The trick is to find other like-minded people who are willing to make the commitment. So far, no dice for me.

When I hit the lottery I'm not going to have a commute, I'll retire!
