I was not feeling well for the family Christmas get-together at our house. So, one family smoked a ham and brought it over. My 10 lb. spiral-cut ham is still unopened in the refrigerator. I forgot about the 2 lb. turkey breast and nobody seemed to mind. It is thawed and cannot be safely re-frozen. I also forgot to cook any of the 10 lb. of white potatoes.

There are only 2 of us and 12 lb of meat and 10 lb of potatoes is enough to feed us for a month. It will spoil long before then.

What do I do?

I would suggest you host a dinner at your house for those in your community who don't have enough to eat. I'm sure that local churches or social service organisations can put you in touch with those who need to eat.

Food pantry at any local church can help you out.

Jeez - really? Can't find a shelter nearby? Homeless or halfway house? Old folks/retirement home?

Not sure what you're asking, unless you want to profit from your bounty...

Yup...

AP should know ALL the poor street people to feed, as they LOVE left wing democrats who want to hand out free stuff that someone else paid for:rolleyes2::rolleyes2:.....

Invite them all into your house,,, you know they won't steal a thing.....:yesnod:........

If you have a freezer and want to keep it, then cut it up, put into pyrex, and freeze.

If you don't want to keep it, I agree with the suggestions of donating it to the local homeless via church, shelter, or direct. When I was in school in Manhattan I'd grab a sandwich from the cafeteria at lunch and give it to a homeless guy who parked himself at my bus stop most days.

Cook it and freeze it. Cook it and invite friends and family over. Donate what won't spoil to a pantry ot shelter.

The potatoes and ham can safely go to a shelter. The ham is cooked and the potatoes will keep for a while or can be baked, boiled, or mashed and served with the ham and feed a dozen or more people. The turkey can go in your oven for Sunday dinner.

I dunno - I don't like to refreeze thawed raw meat. It's more of a quality issue. As long as the thawed meat has been refrigerated the whole time it can safely be refrozen.

According to the USDA:
>>>
Refreezing

Once food is thawed in the refrigerator, it is safe to refreeze it without cooking, although there may be a loss of quality due to the moisture lost through thawing. After cooking raw foods which were previously frozen, it is safe to freeze the cooked foods. If previously cooked foods are thawed in the refrigerator, you may refreeze the unused portion. Freeze leftovers within 3-4 days. Do not refreeze any foods left outside the refrigerator longer than 2 hours; 1 hour in temperatures above 90 °F.

If you purchase previously frozen meat, poultry or fish at a retail store, you can refreeze if it has been handled properly.

Cook it, portion out to family serving size, use a Food Saver to vacpak it and there you go..

Do homeless shelters and food banks take items like meat? It seems that whenever I have donated food they have wanted canned or boxed items which are less susceptible to mishandling. On the same note I have two frozen, unbaked pies which I was going to take somewhere for Thanksgiving but ended up out of town. Then I was going to take them to a holiday party but got home too late to bake them so I had to go the grocery store an purchase a ready-made dessert. I don't want to save them frozen until next year....

wanna share your pie? :wink2::wink2:

You beat me.

Vacuum pack it AP.

Smoked meat will last a long time in the fridge safely. Twice as long as cooked.

Re: Namatse? ( or whatever) You should have no problem deciding how to dispense with unwanted food!

Depends on the facility. If it's a food bank, they'll probably want non-perishable pantry items.

If it's a shelter or soup-kitchen style place that cooks on a daily basis, they might take the ham and potatoes. I know we've cooked and donated a lot of BBQ to places like that. Just have to call and ask.

And if they don't take it, freeze the ham in 1 lb portions. 10 lb of potatoes can be used up fairly easily, and toss the turkey in the oven for dinner tomorrow. It won't go to waste.

The ones I worked for did, but they really preferred sources they knew personally. Sick disgusting people have poisoned "donations" before.

Just thought I'd update with what we did. I found a local food bank that could use such a large ham. Gave them the ham and potatoes. Problem solved.

We are still eating left-overs from the Christmas ham that the family ate.

Here a 12 lb turkey lasted three days.

About 2 days in my house if I have ALOT of Hellmanns mayonaise and toasted white bread and a salt shaker....... MMMMMMMMMM

Sans bread and salt for me, but mayo on turkey, hell yeah!
