Good news about Dad

He gets to keep his thumb. He saw Dr. Magill this morning, and the news was good. Dad has to go back for a bone graft when this stage is healed, but the soft-tissue part of the reattachment was successful.

For those who don't know, my father, a retired cabinetmaker with 50 years experience on the machines, cut off his left thumb and forefinger building a cabinet for himself -- on the very same day I started a thread about a tablesaw safety device.

Great news! Little actually a LOT ironic given your table saw post but happy to hear it!
 
I cut my thumb badly on a table saw a few years ago. It was THE most painful thing I've ever experienced (in comparison to several chain saw cuts, dislocating my shoulder multiple times, and 1 helicopter crash). I was not in danger of losing it but I lost some function and couldn't use it at all for a couple months. That was an eye opener. You dad is probably learning how indispensable a thumb is. It's truly a crippling injury. It's GREAT that he's not going to lose it but I really feel for what he's going through. It's very tough.

Dad was outside mowing the lawn today (on an International Cub tractor). The doc said he can do whatever he wants -- except move the thumb. They have it splinted so he can't (easily) do that. My youngest brother is going to spend the weekend with him to make sure he doesn't overdo things, however.
