good charties

42 posts so far and NO one has asked what a "charties" is.....:D:D:redface:

Whatever charity you become interested in, go to www.guidestar.org. There, after a free registration, you can review information on the charity (actually any nonprofit including AOPA) and download its tax returns. The tax returns of a nonprofit include quite a bit of information on what people are getting paid as well as a complete income statement and balance sheet.

There is a premium guidestar.org membership that gives you access to additional information for evaluating the charity. I have never bought it so don't know much more than that.

Your state may also have some type of charity review body that qualifies charities based on things like the % of income spent on overhead, % of income spent on fundraising, etc. These are good things to look for. There are professional fundraising businesses that end up taking 50% or more of the income from charities they are associated with. Essentially the "charity" is a sham that allows the fundraiser to make money.

Why not find a large flight school that ain't going anywhere and set up a scholarship program with them, if these are the fruits from you're life's work, I'd want to be more hands on than just having a 2 bit lawyer mail a check to the funds dept.

Most charities and non-profits are very profitable, and no where I would want to waste my money, more ends up going tom"administration" than the end user.

If it tastes like camel, you'd be better off eating the leather.

But the point of your post was valid.

I've had some fabulous camel in Doha. Maybe preparation matters...
