GMA: Robin flies with Sully

The only issue I have with the media Sully-worship is that it makes it seem you need to be superhuman to do what he did -- even when he continually dismisses the notion.

AOPA and EAAs publicity teams need to get together and use this. What better way to get folks flying and the pilot ranks up.

Hey! It's a great opportunity to have someone from the press learn what we know - the magic of GA flight. I hope she continues, and perhaps one day, we'll meet at a fly-in or FBO somewhere...

Did you even watch it? I think they used Sully because he is a well known pilot but the piece was really about Robin and her dream.

But why did it have to be with Capt Sullenberger?
Why not? I'll be the first one to admit that I got tired of the Sully hype but he's a pilot the public recognizes. This was a positive story about aviation on a show which reaches the general public. If they used some obscure GA pilot or if Robin was not a celebrity it might not have drawn quite the interest.

...and the level of interest among 80-somethings may have spiked, certainly.

Consider me jaded -- anytime the "media" shows up, I'm less than enthused.

must be nice to go "putt around" in the super kingair... life is tough..

Well any "feel good" piece on GA is good. I just got back from the gliderport, where we filmed a bit for mother's day for the local Fox affiliate. One of our members took his 90 year old mom up for a birthday/mother's day flight, and we got the local Fox station to come out and do a piece on it.

We got some great footage, and hopefully the piece turns out good. I'll post the video after they run the piece.

Considering the end of the video had Sully on the phone telling Robin she had an intro flight lesson waiting for her courtesy of EAA I think they're on top of this already.

I suspect both of them will be at Airventure this year to followup.

May 15 would be a good day to invite a non-pilot for a plane ride, btw.

It's true... you just need to be a glider pilot, that's all. :D

If people want to get positive stories about GA out to the general public what other way is there to do it than the media? Look at it this way, they could have said, "See how close we are flying to the Golden Gate Bridge. We could have run into it!"

Now I woulda tuned in for that!

Strangely enough, I heard a reporter on a podcast today say he saw Sully at Dulles this weekend waiting for a flight (UAL to SFO?) and introduced himself. Reports he is as nice as he seems, they had a good chat, but no one else in the waiting area seemed to recognize him on sight.

Juxtaposed to the average Pt 121 crew at the regional level, such a dismissal of Sully's accomplishments is not easily substantiated.

I say, "regional level" because that is where all the media's attention, therefore the general public's attention, lies.

Yea, but it could have been that a total a*****e had been sitting in the left seat. At least Capt. Sullenberger puts a good face on aviation.
