Woke up this morning, CJane says: "I smell gas!"

I tried to tell her it was nothing, but she disagreed, called the gas company, guy came out, used his "sniffer," went out to the meter and cut the gas off.

Goody.

Gas leak under the house.

Now, I am waiting for the plumber to show up; I just know it's gonna be expensive (grr). No gas until (1) leak fixed, (2) city inspector approves turn-on, and (3) gas company comes out and actually does it.

That all sounds simple and efficient, right?

Think it's gonna be a long day... and it had to happen on the coldest day, in Dallas, for 2 years.

Ugh, my condolences. :(

Better cold than BOOM!

Yeah, funny thing: the gas co. guy was most apologetic about cutting the gas off- I gave him a cup of coffee, and he told me people were often very hostile about it... guess I prefer inconvenience and expense over fiery death and loss of personal property.

Just me, I guess.

Sometimes ya just gotta respect a womans intuition. My wife will tell me the same thing I tell her na not a problem. My wife says honey I think Rachel isn't hearing well. I respond Hey Rachel! Rachel says "What"? I say " Ahh she's fine she's just tuning you out" Doctor says Wow huge hearing loss due to fluid in ears ( Corrected thankfully) Mom is always right.

Repeat after me: MOM IS ALWAYS RIGHT

When will you men ever learn....we're always right!:D

And of course you know, things only break at the most lousiest times.

Stay warm!

OBTW, four burners on electric range make a lot of heat; portable fan blowing over it circulates the heat; so (at least in the kitchen / breakfast area) warmth pervades.

hell just turn the Oven up to 500 or so, leave the door open. Helps if your utilities are being paid by landlord, my friends have told me.

Oh, Spike, say it aint so. A gas smell is nothing? And using the stove top for heating? Oh man.

At least you aren't as bad as the guy I found using gasoline to scrub his kitchen countertops. You aren't, right?

No, Richard, the gas smell *is* something, and that's why my house now has no gas service!

As for the range, well, I am down to one burner only running, and I ain;t gonna leave the room with it on, and there's nothing above or close to the range, so I am tolerably safe.

Here's another one:

http://www.ibew1613.org/library/hawthorn.html

Turns out the basement of the plant flooded and shorted out some control circuits that allowed the gas valve to open and put gas into the boiler (which was off line at the time). When the proper mixture of gas to O2 was reached it exploded. Very fortunate that nobody was killed on this one.

Dallas? It gets cold in Dallas? LMAO

Last time my wife complained about the gas smell, I said "Oh get over it, its just the beans."!

Glad no one made an ash of themselves, Spike!

I hate gas (all electric).

I guess it's all relative, but it was low 20s at the house this morning, frosty windshield.

Spike, do you have a gas or electric hot water heater? I hate it when when you lose the warm air and the warm water at the same time (which is what would happen to me!).

Sorry to hear about the woes... floods at the cabin, gas at the house... sounds like a good thing you don't YET own an airplane!!

I married Miss Wright I just didn't know her first name was always. They do have a way of being right and able to find things I can never find. Damned if it isn't always right where she told me to look and I couldn't find it. I don't know what I would do without her. I guess that is why I kept her around for the last 54 years. Bob:yes:

You kept her? I'm betting it was the other way around since you would be lost without her. :D

Bad - both heat and hot water are gas. House is verycold, and we are trying to figure out what to do tonight, hotel / relatives, what...

Most Mondays, I have a wide-open schedule, but this week, I have a hearing first thing. Just helps. Grrr.

I vote for the hotel - pack some suitcases, find a nice, comfortable locale, treat yourself to room service and relax while repairs are in process.

The Renaissance up in Plano (near Plano Pkwy, the Bush, and 75) is pretty nice inside and usually pretty cheap ($100/night for a business traveler like me)...

I forget how far you are from ADS, but it's a decent place to stay.

Oh! That reminds me. I'll be in Dallas sometime in March - dinner or similar with the Dallas crew while I'm there? I'll be staying somewhere near Westlake.

Cheers,

-Andrew

Leslie, you are so right---- but while, as your sig says, "Dogs have owners; cats have staff," hotels want neither dogs nor cats, so CJane and Tommy are staying at my sister's place (just a few blocks from Tommy's school, so that helps), and I am sleeping here, with dog, cat and electric blanket.

Morning comes, I'll take my hot shower at the gym by the office.

Ah, yes... forgot about the fur factor... Well, I'm confident they'll be happy in helping you to keep warm.

Won't be a big help now, but for future reference: one of the best gifts I gave myself this Christmas? Electrically heated mattress pad. Sounds like it's more for those arthritic days, but after some of the cold weather we had this January, it fast made it to the top of the housewares list...
