This is Cubcrafters' achievement, not Garmin's. Certificated airplanes are catching up with the experimentals!
This is big news as a G3X Touch is a mere $4k (not including nominal incidentals such as converters and whatnot.) It's a total gamechanger for the entire avionics industry.
Might need to add some specificity to your question to get a better quality answer....how does it work if per say I would like to add a G5 to an old C172 with just basic avionics?
thats been a sticky point for a long time. ask the FAA about putting a flat metal panel in any certified aircraft. some get around it by calling it "fabricated a metal overlay to replace original plastic overlay". that is one of the big draws to the aspen, aspen has the STC to replace the panel in the aircraft they have the stc for. the G5 and D10 STC also address opening up the panel for the new unit. I have not seen the STC for the G3x or the skyview, it will be interesting to see how that is addressed on those installations. I addressed it when I did my PA-30 by leaving the old panel and mounting the new one to the mounting pads for the plastic and just calling it a metal overlay to replace the plastic overlay.I would think the biggest challenge to this would be the production of instrument panels to fit the G3X into a certified aircraft. Not sure if you could claim it as an owner produced part and make it your self or if you have to wait until someone develops an STC for your airplane.
Why, they obviously had to do extra work to certify it, involving engineers, lawyers who like to get paid for their work. They also will have to re certify every software update for years, decades to come which they provide as a free service.Hey guys, I'm pretty new about this avionic upgrades thing, I do understand that the same kind of avionic seems to be cheaper for experimental AC than certified AC which for me is ridiculous, but I guess that a different topic?
The Garmin folks at OSH told me they had nothing to do with it, nor were they spending any time on certified approvals of any kind for the G3X.I'd be surprised if this could have been accomplished without Garmin, at least their approval...

The guy I spoke to last on the matter made it sound like they weren't even concerned. Now, it could have been all for show... It could have been that they were out of the loop... It could have even been that they're going to let Dynon pave the way and capitalize on it, knowing that the brand name will carry weight. Lots of speculation at this pointInteresting. How aware were they of dynon?

They changed on a dime, then! Glad to hear it. Friday was the last I talked to them.I bet they are now!
Seriously, by the end of the week they were doing everything except coming right out and saying they were going to have a G3X Touch certified.
