So as to not piggy-back on another poster's thread I've started this one(which will probably not see many responses).

My 24 month X-pndr check is due in July, so I called Craig Avionics(KCON) to inquire about a couple matters.

My 430W was installed in July of 2008, coincident with the X-pndr check that year. Quite some time later I was aware of a software update -- NOT currency -- which would fall within warranty. I've not had said update done but would probably tie it in with the upcoming visit to Concord, NH. Following is Craig Davenport's advice.

Even after two years the software update still qualifies to be done under warranty and he can do it. However, there's a problem.
The specific update causes a problem with the screen and Garmin has not come up with an update to fix the screen problem. Is this old news to those of you with the 430W?

Craig's additional advice is that I should not have the software upgrade done until the FIX becomes available. It'll still remain a warranty resolution.

My policy with embedded devices software like this is NOT to take the upgrade, unless I'm specifically having the problem being fixed by the upgrade.

I'm to understand the original upgrade did resolve an initial problem, but a "side effect" of the upgrade became evident: a visual anomaly on the screen.

HR

Can you describe the anomaly? I am up to date with mone, and don't think it created any new issues.

Harley,

Can you be specific about which update and what the problem is, please?

I believe we're up to date. Our last update fixed an issue with departure procedures containing radar vector legs.

We haven't noticed any display problems.

Craig Davenport didn't give me specifics re the "screen problem;" only that "because of it," he advised to wait on the warrantied software change until the "Fix" of the bug is available.
Craig Avionics is pretty much "The Word" in Northern New England, and Craig is an on-premises owner, often the one to answer the telephone: 800-541-9919. He's one of those owners who "knows" what's happening. When I called him today to inquire about the upgrade status he was quick to say, "You're due in July for your transponder check, you know." I actually thought it was June but when I left the plane there in latter part of June 2008 for the 24 month check the 430W installation and certification stretched into July. Give him a call and he'll probably detail the bug for you.

HR

Hmmmn. I have the current upgrade and no difficulty.....

This thread is worthless without PICTURES!

yes, please describe this mysterious issue. I've not heard of it, and have not seen it, and I keep my software up to date. I have dual 430Ws.

Is it possible that fresh installations after mine may not have needed the initial upgrade/update which fixed a known problem but created another in itself?
****** As noted above: 800-541-9919 to get 1st-hand rather than 3rd party description ******

EDIT: But y'all have me more curious. I'll call Craig tomorrow and learn more.

There was a problem with the software update a year or so ago, but it was fixed with a second update. I got the first for my 530W, didn't see any problems, but got the second anyway. If there's a problem remaining, either it's 430-specific, or it just hasn't appeared on my 530W in a year or more of operation.

I just talked to Craig Davenport(Craig Avionics). He said that the particular warranty update was causing a screen brightness problem, as in contrast. Garmin is aware of the problem, knowing that the update accomplished its intended purpose but caused the unexpected side effect for which a software solution is yet to be available to eradicate the contrast problem.

Ron: we were posting at about the same time. See above. It's apparently 430W-specific.
