So my 430 is bad and I am trying to get my IFR before September when my insurance is due again. Sounds like I may be able to send 430 in to get repaired for a little over 1k but it may be better to find a waas set up like 430/530 or Avidyne’s 440/540. End game down the road I would like to do a full upgrade so don’t want to spend big money on replacement now and then spending big again on upgrade. What would you do? Any other options to consider?

borrow one to finish instrument rating, then sell the other as “parts only”

Too late to upgrade it to WAAS (order window closed May 29)

You can buy another one to slide in (probably cheapest route) or you can go to the 440. It's "slide in" but you'll have to get a new antenna and possibly new coax.

I wouldn't go to a 5xx if you're thinking of redoing your panel anyway.

What's your second nav/comm? You could just non-op the 430 and do the IFR ride "old school"

What is the major problem ,may be worth repairing.

If you wanted to upgrade anyway, you’d love the 440. I thought the Garmin 430 was the bees knees for a long time. Now I have an IFD-540 and couldn’t imagine having to go back :D

I would like to have a 540 but that is a lot of money spend to only go back months from now and do it over again. Was hoping to do all at once but can’t afford to be down right now with IFR training and several trips planned to see family this summer

If you got the $$ and can find a shop, upgrade to 440. In the meantime, beg, borrow a 430 from someone if you can to finish ifr training.

I don't think 440 is plug and play with 430. I think you need to change antenna unless you have a 430W, but I'm not 100% sure.

My 420 W failed a couple of years ago. We sent it Garmin for a flat fee refurbishment. IIRC it was $1200. It turned out that they couldn’t repair it and they sent me an exchange unlit for the same price. They turned it around very quickly. Still working great.

Hope this helps.

I kinda agree with this, but also be realistic about the possibility of not having something else in place and you fully knowledgeable with it in time for u to finish up training before ur insurance is due. I was in a similar situation and it was a little frustrating trying to get a bunch of things done. but I did and luckily my insurance went down a lil bit. don't waste too much money on a 430.

I wouldn't personally repair a 430 (no W). Garmin is running out of parts for that unit and future repair ability will be iffy. But Garmin can turn around repairs pretty quickly. If you can afford it an IFD440 is a no brainer, and an upgrade to boot. When my 430W goes, it's going to turn into an Avidyne. But it will be pricey.

Insurance: don’t they prorate and give you a refund for the remaining months once you get your IR?

GPS: depending on how far along you are, you may or may not want to mess with learning new buttonology Garmin 430 vs Avidyne 440 right before a checkride. September seems a ways off, so maybe no issue for you.

Borrow 430, or get the antenna and coax installed and borrow a 430w, and get the Avi440 later when you can afford it (plug & play, no labor really). Question is, do people actually let other people borrow their GPS/NAVCOM units?

I will check on the insurance but I pretty sure she said I would have to wait another year. May be because I pay for the full year upfront. I will check on that.

I’m researching pretty hard today. Had several people reach out to me with different equipment available and talked to an avionics guy that will help me out with the install if I upgrade. So far I I can choose from

A few 430w
An IFD 540
A couple 530w

Thinking this may be a good time get rid of the ADF and kx 165 while I’m at it

I do the same, pay all up front. If I sold the plane and canceled my policy, I believe they’d prorate a refund. So if I cancelled and renewed with IR, would that be any different? I dunno. Renewed mine this month, IR coming end of August hopefully. I should reach out to my agent.

I got my rating mid policy and got no adjustment after asking.

I suspect this correct. There's a small chance you have to change the coax as well as the antenna.

@Jesse Saint can say with more accuracy.

Would you get a refund for part of the premium if you cancelled?

I'm not sure. I remember joking and saying that I should wreck my plane the day after I pay since I'd be locked in for the year. She did tell me specifically that getting a rating mid policy wouldn't change anything though.
