I am seeking recommendations on keeping my 155XL database updated. I have recently purchased an aircraft with a 155XL installed. My plan is to upgrade to a newer unit within the next two years. I would like to keep the database updated until upgrade time. Thank you.

I don't see a question. But if you seek recommendations, mine is: yes, keep the DB updated. :D

What specifically are you after? You are making us assume and you know what happens when you assume. ;)
So my assumption is that you are looking for recommendations on the source of the updates.
You are unfortunately stuck with Jeppesen. Nobody else provides updates for the "old" Garmin units. The cost is approximately $400 annually.
If I made the wrong assumption, please clarify your post.

And welcome to PoA1

There used to be a guy on Ebay that would exchange a new card for your old one for about $50. Haven't seen him lately. Jep is probably the only way to go. On the other hand, you could use a tablet running Avare with updates.

Thanks cgrab. I am going to milk the ole 155 until I get my first annual out of the way and if all goes well there I will be deciding on a new GTN750 or GNS530W.

there really is no choice there, the 530 is not that much less than the 750 and the 530 is coming to the end of its service life. in the near future, if you buy a 530 and the screen goes out, you will be out of luck. the supply is about dried up. get the new production unit.

Where did you get that data?

I'm sure the rest of the fleet would want to know seeing how most working non FMS planes have GNS boxes, how flight saftey still uses GNS over GTN and how most operators arnt exactly rushing to "upgrade" to GTNs.

there is no reason to upgrade when you have a working box. the GNS series is a very good unit, however, it has been out of production for over 7 years. the parts supply is getting lower every day. thats the reason that they no longer repair the 28v 430, there are a few parts in the power supply that are not available any more. It is know throughout the avionics industry that the supply is about gone. why buy a unit that is that many years out of production that is still that much money. spend a few thousand extra and get a unit that they are still making parts for.

They won't WAAS a 430 anymore?

They will not repair a 28v 430. They will still upgrade it, however, they did raise the prices, most probably to try to drive the upgrade market to gtn's. Also note that some avionics shops will not take certain model numbers in on trade anymore.

Good discussion. All of this owner stuff is new to me as I have been out of the personal ownership game since 2000. I fly part 91 corporate for a living and know all too well how manufacturers view aging equipment when they have newer models on the street. I saw it with the Lear 30 series and I am now beginning to see it with the Lear 40 series as the Lear 70s are now in production. With newer models out there and the support/parts supply begins to wither away. This thread reinforces why I am hesitant to go the 530W route, I have heard the 'parts availability' line before in a separate forum. I would like to move forward with a ADS-B In/Out install and was wanting to do a NAV install at the same time to save having to tear into the panel and my WALLET twice. I may just put all of it on the back burner until I get out of annual in September.
