Russia aside, hard to get a visa to enter Japan right now unless you are SOFA status. Japanese still think they can beat COVID with masks and travel bans.

I have, but only in 'big' GA. And it was in 2010, before the current situation in Russia. Anchorage-Petropavlovsk-Narita.

I once got scarily close to Russian airspace when I flew between the Diomede Islands once.

So are you thinking about a Jimmy Doolittle type trip? I talked to a guy that did that in the 50's-60's, think it was in an RB-57. I don't think I'd want to try it in anything that flew lower or slower.

Japan is slowly opening up. When I talked the the consulate, they told me I could easily get a business visa.

GA is rare in Japan. It's not impossible, but expect typical Japanese (very lengthy and pointless) paperwork. They are typically much more accommodating to gaijin (foriegner) than Japanese citizens. The US DoD bases used to fly GA there in flight clubs, but those are all gone now. You will need a reciprocity JA license to fly in Japan. (*see links...outdated, but may give you some contacts)

From Alaska, you would be flying down through most of the Aleutian islands. Once past say Shimya, you are completely on your own, until northern Japan. Winds and weather in that area is not nice for most of the year. That said, there are many of the small islands with US airbases and runways that you could land at if an emergency arises.

I have no information on eastern Russia. I'd probably take my chances ditching the plane in intl waters first.
