True, but I think this is Appareo's screw-up. They chose to attach themselves to only ForeFlight, including putting their firmware update into the app! They actively kept their protocol closed. I don't know how much ForeFlight's influence tied to that, but it's a huge miss on their part. They had a chance to define the industry standard for this sort of data and they chose to instead play the same game as Garmin by going proprietary. The war was lost at that moment; you do not compete with the gorilla with a frontal assault. The gorilla will tear you limb from limb, and we are beginning to see limbs.
I get your frustration with Garmin continuing to dominate when a little competition would be healthier. But I can't cry for Appareo. This isn't Garmin playing the game unfairly or even particularly well. This is Appareo having made a huge strategic miss.
At the moment, I can't think of a single reason to buy a Stratus anymore. I expect Appareo to open up compatibility now, but it may be too little, too late.
EDIT: Disclosure, I'm both a FF user and a Stratus 2 owner.
