I've decided that I'm going to try to live without my iPad. I purchased an iPhone 6+ and am in the initial period of determining if I can live without my iPad; so far, so good.

A loss is that FF iPad/ iPhone versions are different. I can do without majority of the losses, but appreciate having the documents such as FAR/AIM and the FAA pubs at my disposal AND FF keeps them up-to-date for me. I figure that I can whip out a reg here/there if I'm bored or just want to peruse them for fun...or actually decide to read cover-cover.

Is there a viable replacement for auto-updated FAA pubs? FF also included other books that are aviation related, and I suppose I could d/l them into iBooks.

I used iBooks a lot on my first iPad, then lost everything on the transfer to second iPad. Never trusted it after that, although I've since upgraded twice and don't think I've lost anything. But I don't rely on it. I'm still looking for an app that works as well as FF for organizing documents.

I don't know of any that will automatically update FAA publications. For general document management on the iPad though, GoodReader is my choice since it's cloud synchronization means all I need to do to add a document from home is place it in the proper folder on my PC.

Wow, I never noticed the absence of documents on my iPhone. I have a 6 plus with plenty of memory. I'd like to have the option of loading documents on my phone. Foreflight should provide the capability.

I am coming from a 16Gb iPhone5 and 16Gb iPad2 to a 64Gb i6+

I think the screen is large enough to have the iPad interface, but that's just what I think.

Just thinking outside the box... One could write a script to suck down new docs from FAA and shove them into iTunes using AppleScript methinks. Shove into Goodreader perhaps. Or could suck it into Dropbox.

Then auto sync to iTunes at each power plug in of the iOS device is already supported. Or if Dropbox just open the App if you have network connectivity.

Don't think it'd be easy or very robust. But it'd work.

Curious, why eliminate ipad?

That is one part of iPad FF that I really like. When the FAA releases the new version, FF Downloads pick up on it and it gets downloaded with the other new stuff.

I wouldn't eliminate the iPad just because of the screen real estate available for approach plates.

But then you wouldn't need an iPad. I think the iPhone3 could have had video cam too but then they couldn't sell you the 3s. You kinda see how these fine folks work to sell you more than you want .
