Foreflight 6.3 available

W&B in "Pro" only.

But, now you can do annotations in the standard.

Ugg having an issue getting the W/B to work correctly...

On my 182 it's not depicting the front of the W&B envelope correctly. Looks like that can be fixed manually easily enough.

I got the W/B to work fine. From the tail#, it imported aircraft was a C182P and the basic station setup. A few tweaks for our increased weight STC and others and I was all set. Haven't tried any exporting yet.

One future feature I would like is a tie-in to the planning area to pick up time en route for the fuel used calculation.

Another would be ability to share the setup of aircraft. Consider a school or FBO rental fleet or club. One individual enters in the correct setup and then this is shared to all who need it.

My default setup wasn't quite right either. And yea, it was easily edited and corrected.

They FINALLY integrated what I've (and a lot of others) have been asking for....flight tracking. This will be a huge benefit to me as a CFI!

However....

I REALLY WISH they could allow other ADSB equipment other than their Stratus, I have a iLevel required for another piece of hardware/software combo. I know its a pipe dream but gosh I would forever be their customer (still the best on the street). The problem with the Stratus is that it is a closed system as it simply will not integrate with any other software suite. I would love to port my hardware with every one of my software apps.

Anyone able to get the W&B to sync to their other devices after they are set up on the 1st device?

W&B isn't currently included in Sync, so that doesn't happen automatically. But you can send a copy of a W&B profile to another device via the Send-to > Email option. When you get the email on the other device, tap the link and it will open the W&B profile on that other device.

I didn't know, thanks for posting

I wonder if the tracking feature will decrease device battery life?

I'm curious about that too. And does it work when the device is asleep.

When I'm doing longer XC flights, my habit is to press the power switch and put the Pad to sleep when I don't need it, conserving a bit of battery life.

I'd also like to see the track feature have an auto start option. Have a setting that starts tracking once I'm faster than 40 KIAS and/or climbing at a set ft/min. Sorta like the Garmin transponders that will auto switch to active once they detect a certain speed or climb rate.

was this update announced at AirVenture? I didn't go into the Foreflight booth.

According to Ryan (one of the developers), it won't take any more battery while the app is running. However, when the app is closed the recording will continue to use battery. Also, the recording should continue even with the screen locked.

Just wanted to add that I tested it last night, and yes, it continues to log while the iPad is in "sleep" mode.

And what do you think of the feature....? Useful?

Yes. See my post on the DFW list for an example.

It's a track log - nothing particularly new about that, but it's nice to have it integrated into the app I'm running anyway, versus running two apps (and hoping the one in the background doesn't get closed if resources get low).

I do wish, however, that it was able to display the track ON the Foreflight app itself. Instead, it takes you to foreflight.com, which is great and allows you to share it, but also requires an internet connection. But I'd like the option at the end of the flight (or even during it), to just bring up the track on the app itself, just like car GPSes have been doing for decades. Plus, then you could use some of the other features in Foreflight along with your track log (such as the two-finger ruler tool to measure track distance or turn radius or something).

FWIW, ForeFlight has nothing to do with Stratus not working with others' software. Appareo simply chose to only share their API with ForeFlight because they didn't want to have to spend too many resources on developer support... Or at least that's what they keep telling me. So, it should be easy for someone with the time and knowledge to reverse-engineer it by setting up a WiFi sniffer in the plane while flying and log all the network traffic.

On the other side of things, ForeFlight doesn't (yet) support other ADS-B boxes because there is no standard protocol between them, so they'd essentially have to completely re-do everything they did to bring Stratus functionality on board with every single device that's available, and they've chosen instead to spend their development resources on bringing new features to market. Probably a smart business decision.

I like the Stratus, and for its features I believe it's still the least expensive of the ADS-B boxes (it was last I checked). I do wish I could use it with Xavion as well, but Austin probably doesn't want to spend his time reverse-engineering Appareo's API/protocols any more than ForeFlight wants to spend theirs working with other boxes.

But the tracks can get waaay off. Tried it today. Track was several miles off after I closed the cover, and on a route not even close to what I had traveled.

Anyone else having trouble sending a W&B profile to another device?

I send via FF, but it never arrives at inbox of recipient.

I doubt that's a function of "sleep mode" and more a function of the cover. I put it into sleep mode using the power button and left the cover open, and the device face-up on the back seat. Or, it was coincidental for you that you had some bad GPS data arrive (bad geometry or satellite configuration) while you were in sleep mode.

Sleep mode itself logically shouldn't affect the GPS signal accuracy, as long as the app continues to receive the GPS information.
