It's a great concept if you don't mind walking along a river. Totally useless for filling water bottles (though you could use the filter on dirty water in your bottles if you really wanted to)

Filter = 15 microns? See ya! My $20 dirt simple no glitz filter/pump (no carbon, no iodine, no chemicals) is good for 1 micron and I can beat their flow rate as well..while filling my water bottles with clean water.

It's better than nothing but I'll pass on this one...
 
But this is cheap and fits anywhere. For $2.00 why not? One more tool....

Most bacteria, etc., that you want to filter out of the water prior to drinking are ~2 um, hence why your backpacking filter is 1 um.

And this straw thingie is talking 15 um.

That's kind of like you trying to walk through a half open GA hangar door...no problem.
 
Umm, actually before you decide to blow off this product, consider:

1.) Its cheap - Most impoverished places cant afford a REI filter...

3.) There is more than just "filtration" going on in this device, as it appears.

Given the choice of drinking unfiltered H2O or this, I know which I would choose. Its small enough to fit in a kit.

Because the stuff that'll make you sick is about 7 times smaller than the filter is advertised as being able to handle. The $18 savings in your pocket won't feel as good when you're yakking your shoes up.

This one fits in a 9"long x 4"dia bag (that's 2 filters) with lots of room to spare (no need for a yack sack) total weight approx 8-10 oz including the waterproof bag I carry it in. I wouldn't drink out of a septic tank with it but just about anything else is fair game:
