For Teller 1900

Interesting, I didn't even know it was closed. I wonder why they narrowed it? Seems... unnecessary. It definitely needed the resurfacing, though. The picture they have next to the article certainly doesn't make it look like they eased the grading problem any! Besides, what's the fun of shooting an ILS to mins in heavy snow and poor braking action if you don't get the fun of the runway rising up to smite you; or trying to land over the Burger King bump only to see the runway getting farther away as you flare?!

I was in BHB (for about an hour) two weeks ago. I was hoping I could get some pictures of IWI or (Navy) Brunswick on the way up there, but we were coming from the New York area, so they kept us WAY out over the water; we made landfall somewhere EAST of Vinalhaven, closer to Toothacker Bay. I got to see some islands (and some runways) I hadn't seen before, though!

Hey Matt, shouldn't you be changing your iName?

[EDIT] I wonder if there's any change in the "if you're at one end of the runway you can't see the other end of the runway"(because of the pitch)?

I don't think not seeing the far end is an issue. From Rwy 35, you can only see the approach end of Rwy 8. Can't see anything from 26 or 17, and yes you cannot see the full length of 17-35.

That slope was always a summertime issue for Air New England's DC-3s. They could not depart Rwy 17 with pax when the temps got hot. I forget but I think 80 or 85 was the magic number.

It was closed for a few months.

Last fall they added EMAS at the ends of 17/35. This spring/early summer they narrowed the runway by 50' (hoping to save money on snow removal), resurfaced, took out the hump at the 8/26 - 17/35 intersection (even though it's still there) and are installing PAPI lights (previously had VASI)

I just landed on 17/35 a few minutes ago...she's smooth :goofy:

edit: I happened to be monitoring CTAF when Cape Air landed this morning, so I gave him a "welcome back" to which he replied "thanks, I'll try not to dent your new runway." :)

edit again:

That article is incorrect. Many of the taxiways are still closed...they still have plenty of work to do.

Yeahhhh, should do. I keep forgetting. I'll get around to it today...in theory. :)

The hump could be an issue for us in Beech 1900s! I don't think it ever kept us from going entirely, but there were several times that we were weight restricted if 17 was the only option. The other problem we often had was just how far 17 is from the ramp. Winter time, with only Type I deice fluid, if it was anything more than light rain we didn't have the hold-over time to make the LOOOOONG taxi from the ramp to 17 (with the back-taxi).

That's good...if any airport anywhere needed EMAS, it's AUG (and LEB could use some, too). Did they extend the taxiway all the way down to the threshold of 17, or do you still have to back-taxi?

I didn't read what he said, but I'm guess it was a demonstration of why I don't EVER read the comments on news articles! Especially when it's about something technical that the general public has no clue about.

Taxiway C will take you down almost to the end, then you need to back taxi 400' or so.

I agree - AUG needed EMAS bad. You have a 300' drop if you land long on 35, and you'll end up sliding down the hill into the localizer and in Burger King's parking lot if you overshoot 17.

Good policy about reading articles online, but I couldn't help myself. This Sidney Bob fellow said if the runway could be closed for two months, it could be closed for twelve. He has no idea how many millionaires come through there every year and dump all kinds of money into the state.

Much respect to you Colgan pilots - you guys fly through a lot of crap.

Sounds like the normal anti-airport-for-the-sake-of-hating-something diatribe. I can't see that airport going anywhere any time soon, though. Between the rich people coming in for summer camp, MIF, and the local government, I think that airport is pretty safe. Especially now that the risk of having a plane drop in on BK's kitchen is now reduced with the EMAS!

There are times I really miss the days of the 1900 out of AUG! We did some dumb things sometimes, but it was really great flying. I do NOT miss the 5am pre-flights in the middle of February, though!

I can tell you for a fact - the line guys don't miss de-icing you at 5am on a cold february morning either!

What time frame were you in these parts? A friend of mine/ex MIF line guy/now Cape Air pilot would talk about the 1900s all of time time. His name is Andy - he was at MIF from '05 - early 2012.

I was there 07-09(ish). Andy is a good friend of mine, too, actually! I got to know Brad and Dale while I was there, but it seemed like Laskey was always working when I was. Especially in the most miserable weather! Then again, I think Andy pretty much lived on the sofa at MIF, so I guess he was probably working at the same time everyone at Colgan was working.

A bunch of us tried several times to get him on at Colgan; I know he really wanted to fly the 1900s, but he had the absolute worst timing possible! I think he'll probably be much happier (and employed longer) at CAIR. Certainly looks like he's having fun, according to FB.

Small world!

Yes, Andy is happy where he's at. He's in a great spot to log a lot of time and move on to bigger and better things when he pleases.

As you probably know, Brad left to train in the art of Air Traffic Control :)

And Dale...err...Dale doesn't seem to be missed :dunno:

I tell ya, aviation is a tiny world!

I knew Brad left (he's much smarter than the rest of us, going for ATC!!!), but I didn't know Dale was gone. He was...a character. He was always nice to us. Is Scott the mechanic still there? He was a trip! I'm sure he can tell you some great stories about the stupid stuff CJC maintenance did (I know I sure can!).

There weren't many Dale was nice to from the sounds of it

Scott has left also. He's now a maintenance inspector for the FAA. I had only met him a few times, but his attitude towards everything is much better now - he was due for a change.

Did you ever meet Scott McGregor? He's a younger guy who worked here.
