The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
Ariel gets a brand new G1000 equipped C172 to finish up her training.

Gotta love Ariel. Who knew the skyhawks now are infrared equipped.

And after watching the first few moments of the filmed lesson, I'm wondering if the new instructor will survive the flight.

A brand new 2012 172, owned by Cessna, obviously loaned for the publicity. Wonder if Arial set up the deal last summer while at OSH?

If they can make power-off stalls look that dramatic, I'd love to see what they can do with power-on stalls .

26 minutes in... Both Ferno and Ariel are sporting new Cessna logoed fleece jackets. Yeah.. Some sort of deal is going on...

"The flight planning is math... Angles.... Probably some science thrown in there somewhere."

One of the better Ariel-isms yet.

Trying to watch the O's game and Flying Wild Alaska at the same time may be the hardest thing i've ever had to do.

Possiblly the camera perspective, but that windscreen on the Caravan Sarah is flying looks huge. Reminds me of the DA20 canopy.

And what a day Snugalicious had....

with Ferno's weight being less than average baggage, no weight and balance calculation was necessary.

And what a day Snugalicious had....

what would cause the master caution to light up from a bird strike if not sucked in? seemed to be only the windshield.

The biggest laugh I got was when she and her CFI were doing the flight planning, poring over sectionals...dad walked by and said, "Don't forget to look out the window."

N172FA was registered on 3/28/12. That was brand new!

Um, now about taking her family flying: 4 adults in a 172? And I looked on the FAA site, and while Jim is an ATP, he's not a CFI. I'm guessing Jim was PIC, unless they filmed it after she got her ticket.

Acting PIC. All 3 pax were pilots. Jim was front seat - as PIC. I'm assuming he was passenger current with as much as he flies. He was acting PIC while Ariel flew. It would be no different than me taking 3 friends up flying and letting my buddy fly the plane (assuming I do not have my CFI).

Just as my buddy wouldn't log any flight time for the time he's on the controls, neither would Ariel. She wasn't taking the family flying, Jim was, and allowing her to fly while he did so.

Hmm... She earned her certificate April 21st, but it probably took a week (maybe less) to get that plane up there. Not sure I could have handled the switch from a 152 to a glass panel 172 two weeks before my check ride. That assumes she took the ride in that plane and not the 152.

I think Jim was the only one in the plane over the mythical 170 lb weight, so weight was no doubt within the limit.

Ariel's sister is very attractive :yesnod:

Cessna undoubtedly struck a deal with them - smart move!

Jim said he asked Cessna for a favor. He's obviously a good customer they'd want to keep happy. Didn't they buy the 150 specifically for Ariel to get her cert. in?

Well...her cert was issued on April 21st, she may have had her temp cert for several weeks prior to that.

No, the issue date is the same date that you receive your temporary cert. so she passed her check ride on that date.

Very likely she did so. The funny part is that all these people think she's dumb. Sounds like a pretty smart move to me.

Not as bad as watching the Phillies.

It probably cost a few grand to get the 172 to Alaska, but that's pretty cheap for the exposure they got. :D Also, I'm sure Jim mentioned that Piper had offered a new Warrior (or whatever they sell) ;)

the faces she makes looks like genuine oh sh*% fear

I passed my ride on March 7... license is dated April 15.

That show is fun. Sure, there's got to be a lot of editing and substitution of one set of wheels touching down when in fact its a different plane than was shown from the long shot. But . . . they're telling a story that is interesting and fun, and trying to do it within a budget.

Because a lot of viewers such as myself record shows and zap through the commercials, product placement is the best way to ensure the product is seen.

Weird. I passed my checkride on April 13. Plastic card says issued April 13 and so does the FAA database.

Same with me. My Private check ride was on December 7th and my Instrument check ride was on September 30. Same dates on my certificates and the FAA database.

I wonder if Arial will be getting a pilot watch since those were featured quite heavily in the show.

David

when the show started, it seemed like she was only there because of the cameras - that's how I took it

I've got no problem with that. Plus, it shows another female pilot, which is always a pro. We might get another Kimberly out of it! :)

Agreed, just explaining the connection. The show is great.

The watches actually look pretty slick. :)
