I think Bonnier made a better choice this time with Robert Goyer than they did with Michael Maya Charles.

Oh, if the walls could talk!

?

Maybe the next issue is in my mailbox and I will understand this comment better.

Dunno what all is going on around there, but the magazine has been much more appealing lately -- starting to bring back memories of the glory years of the '60s and '70s. I might even subscribe again.

Ah-ha, a quick check of the news reveals more...

Wow. That was quick. 4 months?

I like Robert Goyer's stuff. I'll be interested to see where the magazine goes from here.

If our paths ever cross I will have to buy you a drink or three, and learn more, oh wise one!

I'm unfamiliar with either gentlemen but did enjoy the introductory remarks and the "Setting Course" idea in the OCT2010 issue. Evidently Mr Charles wants to be a "flyer who writes".

I enjoy Flying Magazine. Since I subscribed over a year ago, not one issue have I got that I did not learn something.

I received a free subscription to Flying magazine awhile back and thought I had been overcharged considerably.

I felt that same way. But I am starting to hear good things about the magazine of late. I might have to pick up a used copy from someone who is subscribing to see if it is any better. It certainly could not have gotten worse.

Lessee:

Les Abend bitching about how hard life is, commuting from FL to NY to go to work to boss someone around.

Dick Karl describing every flight to NH with his dog and wife in his Cheyenne. Did I mention he has a Cheyenne?

Lane Whatsername flying to odd places with a variety of men she seems to have made the acquaintance of.

Peter Garrison talking about math. Calculus maybe. Dunno.

Aftermath (I think that's what it's called) a hard look at stupid pilot tricks.

Mac Maclellan, until recently, talking about whatever swanky biz jet he flew his Baron to go visit and fly.

Some English doctor practicing in the USA, talking about medical issues. I have none, but I find his column illuminating and entertaining.

A swanky business jet reviewed.

Other filler. That's the average month. I still read it cover to cover because it's filled with pictures of naked airplanes.

He has had it for most, if not all, the time he has been writing for Flying.

i have enjoyed Martha Lunken's articles.

Don't worry. The next edition will have a column from the new EIC espousing the same philosophy.

Stay tuned. The new guy has promised to dumb it down.

The innuendo here is that a few years ago he was going to buy a Mustang (not the P-51). To that end, he rearranged his life to be more efficient and get more money in the same way I reshaped my life to rent Cherokees. But apparently he was unable to swing it at a 2.5 million airplane after all and still drives his Cheyenne.

OK, now a poll.

Do you think worse of Flying for jettisoning MCM so soon after hiring him?
Do you have an opinion of Robert? Do you think he's the guy the magazine needs?

One of his best articles was when he realized it made no sense to buy the jet and wasn't gonna happen. Now he's trying to figure out some justification for keeping the Cheyenne.

Wait, back to the original post... Just this morning, I read the Oct flying that introduced Michael Maya Charles, and he's out already?!? That is odd.

I'll add my $0.02 on Flying Mag. I enjoy it. I have read probably 90% of each issue for the last 25 years, and quite a bit before that (Grandfather's library).

Of the current contributors, I enjoy Dick Karl's articles. Since I don't fly a turbine, it is good to hear about maintenance, expense, flight planning and en-route operations. I also like how he sometimes draws parallels between flying and his profession (surgeon).

Honestly?

I didn't notice one way or the other. If they thought it wasn't going to work, kudos to them for pulling the band-aid quickly.

Bob Goyer writes a pretty good airplane review. That's about where my opinion begins and ends.

What do I think the magazine needs? 2 or 3 more airplane reviews, said airplanes being anything under a twinjet. The Hawker800CLLear23PremierMustang is completely irrelevant to me. One per issue would suffice. I love reading about airplanes. I'm just not into bizjets.

Yeah, I know, that's what Plane & Pilot does. I'd like a magazine that does so without breathless !!! on every cover. Top 10 Planes you can own NOW!!!! Top 10 Reasons You Can Fly NOW!!!! Top 5 Places Where You Won't Get A Beat-Down by Airport Cops!!! Enough with the !!!!!!!
