So US Army = "welfare"?

What's the private equivalent of the US Army?

The preamble to the U.S. Constitution says something about, "...promote the general Welfare."

I guess it depends on whether someone considers, "welfare" pejorative.

In the sense of the thread, "welfare" is pejorative ("hand out, supplemental income with work," etc).

In addition, the preamble contains "provide for the common defense..." as a separate clause.
