I didn't even know that I was a FlightPrep user. I signed up for an account years ago when I tried out their Golden Eagle software. Just got this tonight...
Subject: Important Information From FlightPrep

Dear FlightPrep Customer,

Similar to the security break-in throughout the retail industry we just became aware of an unauthorized access to our system that possibly exposed your name, email address and/or password that you use with FlightPrep software for data updates and downloads. We have since deployed new security measures to prevent such access in the future.

For your security, we encourage you to change your password in any other application (email, websites or others) that may have used the same login information combination. And be aware of common email scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. FlightPrep will never ask for your credit card number or other personally identifiable information via email. We also urge you to be cautious when opening links or attachments from unknown third parties.

To view your FlightPrep account information, go to our home page, log in and click Account Information. From there you can see your account information, your subscriptions, and change your password. When you change your password please ensure that you also change the password stored in any FlightPrep application that you use like Golden Eagle, ChartCase, or iChart. Instructions on how to change passwords in FlightPrep applications are available at the site described above.

We regret this has taken place and any inconvenience this may have caused you. If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact us at 503-678-4360 or support@flightprep.com. We take your privacy very seriously, and we will continue to work diligently to protect your personal information.

We realize that you may have previously unsubscribed from communication emails from FlightPrep, and that will continue, but we feel an obligation to make you aware of this incident.

Sincerely,

The FlightPrep Team

Someone should sue them for failing to be responsible and hash/salt passwords.

I have my suspicions about the direction this attack comes from  .

I never condone hacks....but I won't condemn this one either. FlightPrep made their bed. I suspect this additional hit to their reputation will only serve to right the wrongs they've done.

Maybe they should have gotten a patent on securing their data. Then they'd have cared a little more.

nah, they should have gotten a patent on hacking data.

:D

This sounds like some disgruntled pilot.

What goes around, comes around...

Since they referenced recent retail hacks, I wonder if it is similar to the Epsilon email service hack that I've heard from several other companies. This is the reason for not using the same password on all your accounts.

And there's only so many off-site data backup companies. When one of them has a breach a TON of customers can be affected.

Bingo!

Good point. I use a different password for all the sites/accounts I access online. Password1, Password2, Password3, Password4, etc. etc. :D

but if you don't log into the sites in the right order, you're hosed! :D

I got the same message from them. A few days after getting one saying it was time to renew my update subscription. Given that I have up on Golden Eagle when I couldn't get it to work on my Windows 7 machines (and I'm not interested in a fix, thanks) I see no reason to send any more money their way.

Epsilon only gave up email addresses and first names. These guys announced that more was lost.
