When the clock strikes midnight our log book times go to zero for the old year. Time to plan the first flight of the year!

Who will be the first to land and take off after midnight? Who will have bragging rights for 2014?

Sorry, commercial pilots don't count, you need to be hung over from the new years eve party the night before. Wait, you guys qualify! Never mind, you are in!

Log your first flight for 2014 here! :goofy:

I've been in the air for probably three or four new years as the clock ticks over.

I would love to , but...I can't............ Jackson Hole Airport has a curfew from 10 pm to 6 am... and I ain't paying the 1000 dollar fine...:nonod:

Sitting here trying to decide if it's worth the hour pre-heat and freezing my nads off at the hangar. Ha.

Going up at 3pm tomorrow; someone will probably beat me.

Murphey probably won if she went flying at midnight like she was planning.

Already done the first round of blowing the snow off the driveway. Second round later this afternoon.

Have fun in the air without me.

Didn't put any thought into it until reading this thread. Unfortunately, when I got to the airport the FBO was closed and the hangars were devoid of life with not a soul in sight. 'Tis the life of a renter, lol.

Happy New Years anyway!

Close, but no cigar!

No one has flown yet this year?

Yup, that's me in the left seat.

Takeoff at 3:20, landing at 4:05. Wished the controller a happy new year and everything. Unfortunately, I don't have proof other than this picture of the plane and my good word.

I am having an early dinner at Half Moon Bay now. We took off about noon Pacific time, hiked around and will be leaving in about 1/2 an hour for home.

Was off @ 1:00 pm Eastern. No heater, open cockpit I guess you could say. I'll post some pics later.

I took off from Las Vegas this morning at around 8:30, headed back to the frozen midwest. We flew 3:30 today, we're dragging our feet due to some winter weather near home, time zones, and not wanting to leave the nice weather.

Photos from today's flight. That white crap on the beach is snow. Kicking the sun makes summer arrive sooner right?

Flew with a student at 12:30 CST today in preparation for her private checkride tomorrow. It was REALLY cold.

Club always flies on the 1st. First flight of the new year, 4000 ft tow in the SGS 1-26D and slow drift down in calm air with no lift. A strong inversion aloft. And then took my turn in the tow plane. Club had about 15 flights today.

Departed at 2:00 eastern for a 3 state tour, 4 airports, plus a few loops and rolls. 1.8 hours in the logbook.

Do I get some sort of consolation prize?

I flew a cross country with my dad to Stewart( SWT) and landed around 1:00 pm eastern time. It was a nice flight but man were we slow going up there- flew at around 90 knots in a 172.

On the way back we had to dodge an isolated snow shower but we hauled butt coming home and made it back in about 25 minutes! First 2.1 of 2014 in the books!

SWT is Seward, not Stewart.....another Nebraska pilot??

Had my first flight today....for work. Took off around 7:45 and around 60 miles southwest of lincoln hit some precip/low vis that wasnt supposed to be there. I got *ahem* close to VFR minimums and turned around. Then after I landed back at lincoln (real greaser) I had a failure of my right brake. good times.

Got my ticket Nov 2011.. My wife never flew until yesterday (1/1/14) because she wasn't sure she was gonna like it.. Well after a quick trip around the pattern she loved it.. And wondered why such a short flight? I figured why add fuel since I figured at least 60seconds into she'd want to land .. I was wrong, she loved it!!

We were visiting my folks in S Fla, meant to fly back home on the 1st.
Weather back home was somewhat marginal - 500ft ceilings, which meant a 50/50 on a RNAV into Deland (that's my MDA) and reasonable for an ILS into Daytona. Which meant a cab ride home and wife dropping me off in the morning on the 2nd to take the plane to Deland. Oh well, the inlaws had a flight in 8-something pm on the 1st, so had to be there to pick them up.
Drove to the airport, untied the airplane, did a full preflight, had the fuel topped off, loaded the bags, frowned at the WX again.. Just to realize that I left our headsets at the parents house. Another hour+ of driving back and forth would put our ETA past sunset.
So that was the time for the magic "Screw it, we're driving". Don't think I ever had to cancel a flight on such a short notice, but in retrospect I'm kinda glad I did. Clouds were down to 300-500' and together with light rain that wouldn't have been fun in the dark. And it was foggy all morning today, so I'd have to sit in DAB for a few hours till it lifted.
So much for my first flight of the year :)

Last flight was 19 Dec. next day was a rompin stompin storm and we have yet to recover.
Airport is legally closed (which I usually ignore) but it has been iced over for over two weeks now.
They have given up scraping. Ramp and runways have NIL brake action and snow drifts.
Dunno when it will be possible to fly (ignoring the finer points of regs)
First time on many years I have not flown on Jan 1.
There is always next year - not guaranteed at my age though.

First flight this year was on the way back from the Bahamas today. :)

We did fly home on the first but not until the end of the day.
Flight Aware

The party really got going at 1:00 am.... most left by 6:00...

Aging out of all night parties, inevitable. Flying home after a late brunch, Priceless!

Happy NY Y'all!

I was planning my first flight of 2014 to be on Friday, but I had to work instead. After today's snowfall I doubt if I'll be able to get into the hangar before March, much less get the airplane out to go anywhere.

Y'all have fun now.

I got checked out in a Super Cub on New Years day!
As I'm more of a RV, Hiperbipe, Pitts kind of guy I thought STOL-ing would be a a yawner...NOPE!:goofy:
This Super Cub has VG's and balloony type tires...landing at 35 mph was a squishy impact on the planets surface followed by a cartoonishly short ground roll. Takeoff was the reverse; power in, count three, PULL!:yikes:

Did 13K crosswind TO and landings on grass as well as OPs from a hard surface. All great fun!

My biggest hurdle in the checkout?
Much heaver stick forces than I'm used to? Nope.
Enough adverse yaw for 10 airplanes I normally fly? Nope.
Trying to remember how to fly a carb equipped fixed pitch airplane? Nope.

My biggest problem during the whole checkout was geting in (and later, out) of the stupid airplane! :mad2: Busted my butt twice!

Anyway; It was a Great way to start the year!

Happy New Year;

Chris

PS
Dave; you really need a different avatar...that kitty is just...well...disturbing...
