First Annual.

Sorry, the Lone Star State is a bit far to base my airplane, a bit too full of Texans to my taste and has far too many firearms. I described the vast majority of airports where I live that I've seen with my own two eyes.

Howdy, pardner, welcome to our spread. Glad you stopped by to set a spell. You want sweet or unsweet tea?

Packing heat makes for a friendlier society. The proof is right there.

It is heavily airfield dependent.

At several of the larger fields in the NYC area, you may have 2 or 3 places to choose from. I also know of a mobile A&P/IA at KFRG who will come and do your annual where your plane sits, and even let you assist in the repairs. The downside is that the people based there pay as much for a tie down for their 182s as I pay for a hangar for my Aztec, and you have to deal with all the excess traffic. We'll ignore the higher cost of living.

At my airport (the only one near me), there is one FBO. It's relatively cheap to be based there, but still not rock bottom. That FBO prohibits you from performing ANY maintenance (including oil changes) in their hangars. They're the only option, and there are no outdoor tie downs. I can fly my plane to other airports (and do so) to get maintenance done, simply because I disagree with their practices. It also doesn't hurt that their prices aren't great, so I actually save money flying someplace else to get the work done. Since I travel a good amount, I also often end up spending a day or two in a location where a shop that specializes in one exact squawk exists, or where I otherwise have friends who will help me get work done.

Both scenarios are valid and I wouldn't describe either as fantasy world. It just depends on where you are based and the specifics of your situation. As with many things, good old American know-who does have an impact.

I guess I get a little antagonistic in these sorts of threads when I hear a couple professional mechanics tell me what a boob I am for not knowing every bolt on my aircraft.

To turn this around, I might say something like I think you are all a bunch of boobs for not knowing all about genetics. It controls a fair-sized chunk of your destiny, and will have a huge say in what happens to your offspring. Yet none of you knows even the first thing about it.

Obviously I don't really think this or anything like it. But that is the effect some of the mechanics in this thread (and others) have had on me. It may be just me, in which case I beg the forum's indulgence in my little fit of ego.

Nobody said that you were a boob for not knowing all the bolts. The comment was that Bach wrote a complete article on the effects of not knowing the mechanics of your airplane. I suspect that you can probably find that article online if you care to read it.

The Austrian monk Gregor Mendel and I are casually acquainted through a couple of college courses in genetics and ecology. Fine man, great mind, nice work, logical conclusions.

Indulgence noted.

Actually, he probably falsified his data. Thanks for the indulgence.

As we have seen in Baghdad and Somalia.
It was a joke. It's a rather complicated subject and not something I generally like to discuss. I'm here for airplanes - not for gun debates :)

So have I. Good luck controlling your MX budget.

You two are going to be REALLY close. Really, really, close.

Here's what I had done. Some was squawked by me, and some was squawked by him. Some of this is of course completely optional:

Stab rivet replacement (2)
Wing rivet replacement (2)
Belly plate rivet removal
Battery drain hose replacement and clean corrosion
Gear warning horn switch replacement
Replace exhaust support clamp

AD 74-13-03 bolt replacement (removes AD)
AD 75-12-06 fin inspection
AD 77-08-01 & 79-20-10 aileron inspection
AD 2005-12-06 impulse coupler on the mags

Replace left landing light - my squawk (yes, I could do it, but it's already there)
Resurface #5 exhaust flange - my request
Replace rocker cover gaskets - my request
Mixture control changed to vernier - my request
Throttle control changed to vernier - my request
Cabin door seal replacement - my request

For a first annual where I did not have a mechanic do the pre-buy inspection...I say I came out clean.

I agree.. sounds like a good plane.. Congrats and fly it often.

And if you deduct the things you added the bill would have been 1678.35.. $

Compeltely understand. I had the AP install a new plastic air vent flange last annual. I had the part but had not found the 15 minutes to do the actual install. Since it was in for annual anyways I just gave him the part to install.

This is why I am starting to hate aviation. How the hell is a $2500ish annual a good thing??

Sheesh.

Because my first annual cost me $40,000, and 8 years labor.

Well i guess you're an idiot Ed, because you spent more than a few hundred bucks.
:rolleyes2:

Since the annual is an inspection only it should only cost about $500.00 for the annual inspection.

However the out come of the annual inspection to accomplish all the required item to return the aircraft the service is the unknow...

Lots of people think an annual is repairs, but it not it's only an inspection.
