Finding the right AME

I prefer AME's who are pilot themselves. No particular reason, except that the pilot/AME's I've used seem to have a real grasp of what flying is about.
 
(1) CURRENT pilot
(2) Has familiarity with Authorizations for special issues: that means he already knows what is required for the not "all NO box" medicals. Use Volume (# of medicals 50), and his receptionist's knowledge of the phone numbers for OKC.
 
Call me stupid, well not really, but I have been seeing the same non-pilot AME for the last few years. Although I have no medical issues, he seems to really care and want to help people. We will see when the !@#$ hits the fan some day, if it ever does. He also likes it when I use AOPA Turbomedical for the medical form. I guess it saves him a lot of work.

I was asking because I want to go in for a consultation to find out if I can pass the medical before even really applying. There is one local AME who is not a pilot. The next one would be about 1.5 hour drive...No big deal really, but it is a question I am trying to sort out.

As long as you don't sign any FAA form to be submitted, you're safe. So, until you have absoute certainty, DO NOT SIGN any FAA form nor any other medical form until you've had a good talk with an experienced AME in your given issue.
 
Can anybody recommend a good AME in the Bay Area? I had my last medical before I moved here, and my renewal date is coming up (actually, it's already 2 weeks past).

How would one go about finding the experienced AME? Should I just call and ask to speak to the AMEs around the area? Dr. Bruce, can you make any specific recommendations? And also thanks for getting me in touch with Allen!

Tommy, it's totally a local phenomenon. Ask the pilots. They know. Especially the older ones (wtih problems).
