Hi

Does anyone have a recommendation for a non-industrial looking filing cabinet - or something that could double as one?

I don't want bare ugly metal, and I don't want ugly "looks like wood", either. One that is actually wood (but not 500 pounds) would be acceptable but not necessary.

I'm thinking more along the lines of one that is either a foot-ish tall, or two feet-ish tall (IE one compartment or two, in height) and at max, only one legal-sized folder wide or even letter sized folder wide.

Practically a storage cube, in other words.

I already have two small storage cubes I bought at Z Gallerie a few years ago, they are funky, fit right into the decor of my office and work great. In case you are wondering - the current cubes are deep red alligator-embossed looks-like-leather cubes - think small steamer trunk, really. I have an oriental rug with lots of reds, a black desk and red desk accessories, several Africa and New Zealand prints on the walls and dark-slate-grey curtains... so they all pull together.

However, these cubes are filling up and to be honest I'd just as soon empty them and use them for my camera odds and ends (all the lenses, random accessories, and so on.)

Thanks.

Buy a simple steel one and have an upholstery person cover them with split-leather.

Try Staples or Office Depot - they usually have a few styles of wood file cabinets.

I like the idea of covering one up - excellent!

Yellowbird - thanks for the suggestion. I'll check. Trying to avoid the wood-panel look though.

Agreed on the covers; you should be able to have "panels" made which would be affixed with velcro (for real), or brackets. Done all the time.

Gerstel Office Furniture in Merrifield.

Large collection of used office furniture at great prices.

I have a lateral file that I got there for <$100. It's built like a battleship.

I love the suggestion of putting a nice coating on a metal cabinet. Or you can take and get it painted at Earl Scheib, then use an airbrush to put some "art" on it. Wouldn't it be cool if you could transfer some of your photos to whatever it is that you use to cover it? I think you can get photos printed on fabric that you can glue to said metal box.

Blah... no metal filing cabinet cover-ups! :(

Get THESE on page 49 instead! Various sizes for your needs... I'm sure you can find something. I always do!

This is one of my favorite catalogs. Beautiful furniture... even for the office! :) Longaberger (baskets) also has a fabulous filing cabinet basket that would look great with any of those!

This is what I have:

It's oak veneer over a particle board core with solid oak trim. Staples carries the line.

Yellowbird, let me know how that looks in two or three years. Mine of the same source & design has files falling out the back of the drawer, and the drawer bottoms are bowed down. It still works, but poorly.
Next tme, I think I'll get drawer glides from the hardware, and build my own.
