Anyone have a field-box that you keep at your plane's tiedown, for storage of common items?

We've been talking about having some type of weatherproof/sealed box that we can cable to the rear tiedown of our plane's parking spot to hold some misc items. (oil, paper towels, rags, cleaners, basic tools or something)

At my dad's this weekend I came across a large steel cooler that he had for a long time and was getting rid of. With a locking hasp and steel cable, it may work pretty well.

Please share your ideas and what you keep in your box that you find usefull.

I've had a running eBay search for a Knapp or JobBox or equivalent. They go in the $400 range but the bigger issue is shipping. They weigh in the 500 lbs range.

I spotted a Chinese knockoff in the Kobalt house brand at Lowes for IIRC $200-$300. There may be similar at Harbor Freight and HOBO.

My community hangar has been safe enough that I'm thinking a Rubbermaid box would work.

At present I don't have anything valuable in the hangar anyway. I was looking with the idea I'd get a a generator. My neighbors just chain those up and are fine.

Don't buy Chinese.

The Rubbermaid boxes do not stand up well to prop wash at KHPN. Be careful where you place them!

So I guess you finally struck that deal huh? Before you go spending time and effort check with Tom first. I am pretty sure they don't want a whole bunch of Dock type boxes all around the field.

He oked it.

Go to Craiglist or other to find an old pick-up truck tool box. Sturdy, cheap, secure, weather proof....

Saw one a few spots down from our tiedown spot tonight, gives me a good idea. It was a black heavy duty plastic type box, and the guy had it chained down the the one tiedown. I've seen ones like this at the hardware store,... I'll check it out this weekend.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Found this after some searching, and set it up this morning. I figured closer to the wing tiedown may be better, as it is up against the paved area and less for the mowers to work around. This also provides some weather protection from the wing too.

Big enough to hold rags, some oil, etc.

But hopefully not oily rags - black box, oily rags, spontaneous combustion...

No,.. clean dry rags,....

The box is vented a little, below the yellow line, but not in a way that water will get in as it will drip off the sides at the return in the box side. So it should breathe with changes in humidity and air temperature.

Knaack's HQ and factory is just up the road form you on Rt176 in Crystal Lake. I wonder if they have a factory store?

Rob - If you're still parked next to the Viking Witch, I don't mind if you put it at the base of the hill between yours and ours. I'll chip in if you'd like and keep some communicty cleaning supplies for the two air moechines.
