Flew on airlines this morning, IAH to SAT.

What are the strip mine looking features just south of Wells (66R)?

Also I saw a couple of red water bodies adjacent to like maybe livestock feeding operations?

Google fu suggest a lignite mine

There are gravel mines along the Colorado river South of Columbus. there are coal mines closer to Austin One is next to a power plant. The Eagle Ford shale play comes closer to the surface around Austin. Native Americans used to light shale rock on fire for cooking and such.

Ranches, with rock quarries. Then on the side further down, a dump with more quarries.
