Farting in the cockpit.

I'm concerned about the impact of farts (which contain a significant amount of methane and other hydrocarbons) on the lubricants in the gyro bearings - will the oil be diluted / contaminated and increase wear on the bearings? Should the club aircraft be placarded "No Farting"?

Anyone have any direct experience with this?

I farted in my airplane once…………………..once.
 
The side window in a 182 will vent the worst farts in nanoseconds...like it never happened. Pressurized aircraft are a "wholenother" animal.
 
Hypothesis:
Over time the polyurethane foam in the seat bottom will deteriorate in the center and somewhat less longitudinally front to back. However, that deterioration is masked by the compressive wear on either side.

Someone needs a Masters thesis, there you go. Do chemical analysis of foam samples from various aged fleet planes, and compressive strength and microscopic analysis, to prove/disprove.

My grand never gave me any words of wisdom for farting in airplanes, but I gave ya what I know.
 
The methane gas in flatulence can be very damaging to the air filters because it causes them to oxidize and break down. Once this happens the seals that hold them together get too brittle and it can cause way too much air to flow through them which will cause an over heated condition and could cause a dangerous in-flight condition and I have no idea where I’m going with this…

Farts won’t hurt an Airbus.

RyanB probable cause: the pilot's failure to resist saying "pull my finger" to the co-pilot.
 
All those fumes go through the vacuum system too!
 
A friend of mine told me his favorite airplane was any airplane requiring a 3 person crew.

Because with a 2 person crew the guilty person is immediately known....
It was the dog!

You almost got it right.

After the seals fail, methane can leak into the intake and cause surging power. More power sounds good, but the surge will cause your exhaust valves to resonate and produce an oscillation sound, kind of a low frequency burp. Too much of this and the resonating will cause a vacuum which suck from the sump and you're get an explosive blackish/brownish discharge from your exhaust valve. By that time, it's way too late.

So yeah. Don't trust a fart.

Methane is known as an extremely powerful greenhouse gas. What has been covered up by the industry is that the greenhouse affect of the methane increases exponentially with the altitude at which it is released. Global warming is largely the fault of flatulent turbine pilots.

I hear if you mix tetraethyl lead with fart gas, they both become inert!
 
My buddy told me his DPE ripped one of the worst ever on his PPL checkride, there was no hiding or denying it, and so the DPE told him,"Consider that your distraction".:confused:
Now that's funny....
 
I once farted and made my dog leave the room. I was on one side of the couch, she was on the other (Aussie cattle). I had eaten broccoli and steak early that evening. I farted and it was horrible, even for me. My dog raised her head, gave me the "seriously?" look, and went to lay down in the kitchen. I was so proud.

I can't wait to stay in the dorms at Oshkosh.

Oh, I keep the windows or vents open in the plane, regardless of temp...for a reason.
 
Whhew i knew all those leaks in a 1947 cabin were good for something! I always figured they must not stink at altitude
 
An old teacher buddy of mine used to have a "conference" with a disobedient student by getting the offender cornered, explaining how he might change his way, all the while letting an SBD roll out. Offending students tended to avoid those conferences, and the bad behavior that might get them into that situation.
 
Two active threads about farting. I'm sure my wife will tell me I've found the perfect forum :)
