I have to applaud the Airmen Certification Branch for their efficiency. Seriously!

My son took his PPL on August 27th and just got his hard card on September 30th. The card arrival might have been sooner had it not been for Hurricane Helene.

Those folks must be working really hard in that office to churn these out.


FWIW, he's taking his private multi engine (VFR only) checkride this morning so we will see if the pace holds true.

Multi in ~30 days? Where is he training?
 
Over in Crystal River. He’s pretty much been flying every day with the exception of during the hurricane.

Once he gets his multi done, I will do his instrument work in our 310 or the 421 so he will build multi PIC time and instrument time as he works towards a commercial rating.

Once the FAA finally gets the rule making done to remove expiration dates from instructor certificates the work load will reduce over the next 24 months and you may see even shorter times.
 
My dad's old flight instructor retired and was working out of Crystal River.
 
Recently registered a plane whose registration had expired… in the past this has been taking a year or more. This time, a month or so ago, maybe 3 weeks.

A replacement airworthiness cert, 3 days?

The FAA just published the NPRM in the Federal Register, effective 12/1/2024, that will phase out the expiration dates on CFI certificates over the next ~2 years.

Figures, my expiration date is 11/30/24.
 
Just got a call from my son.

He passed!

Approximately 8.5 hours dual in the multi.

He now has 88 hours of total time.

Now to work his butt on instruments for another 160 or so hours.

Probably another thread on this already but removing the date from the card is not a removal of the requirement to renew/FIRC/in-person class/meet the number of students/Wings renewal, etc.

It’s just switching to the familiar calendar month renewals and now you track it yourself. It’ll also remove the date from the data dump the FIRC companies use to send you reminders with.

They just don’t want to print cards with useful information on them. Keep your new card with no date on it until it’s unreadable and then likely pay them for a replacement.

Ironic from an agency that loves printed material to back things up from printed in multiple places and referenced, innit?

If it’s for some environmental concern about all the plastic, make the thing out of metal with embossed indestructible raised lettering and numbers. Hahaha.

Lots of folks who just do FIRCs every couple of years will lose their certificates if they aren’t paying attention.

Oh yeah. They added a 90 day grace period if you screw up renewing on time also. Why that one isn’t also calendar month based to be consistent, nobody knows… as always. Ha.

you still have to complete the 24 month update training as in a FIRC by 11/2024. They'll issue a new certificate with no expiration date. But then in 11/2026 or before you still have to do the "recertification effort", file it with FAA in IACRA, but they don't issue another certificate. They also provided 3 months after the expiration date to renew by FIRC or other already approved means without having to visit another check ride.

In the end, the instructor certificate is still only "valid" for two years, you need to update the training and file it. The FAA just does not reissue a new certificate. They save $$$ printing and mailing the certificate. They save you nothing, but they did give you an extra 3 months to renew for no penalty.

I know the new rule doesn’t get me out of doing the FIRC every two years, but my point was, it doesn’t go into effect until 12/1/24, so this year I’ll get one more with the expiration date, and then get another in 2026 without.
