I've signed people off for checkrides with 6 DPEs among 3 FSDO districts. Can't say I've ever had a problem besides a need for more DPEs.

At my flight school, we always set up the check ride. Our students are never responsible for that.

I've never called an examiner for a checkride and was never given the choice. Always set up by the instructor. Well, come to think of it, I don't know who set it up. I assume it was the instructor. lol.

I never even set it up either. It was always the girls that worked the desk who called the examiners and set it up.
