Equipment codes confusion.

If you fly in an airplane with a GPS that has an expired database, you can still file /G.

Doesn't it depend on the database? I flew a 162 with a G300 and they never updated the database, had to file /A because the nav fixes were unreliable. I was told if the nav database was updated it could be a /G though...

For IFR, it depends on if the GPS is installed and approved for at least enroute and terminal use. If you have current charts, you can verify the database. Most waypoints, airports, and VOR's don't change and you can verify their location and still use the database, even though it is expired. VOR's and airports are relatively easy to verify if you have current charts and many waypoints are similarly able to be verified. The following is from the AFMS of a GNS430:

IFR enroute and terminal navigation predicated upon the GNS 430’s GPS Receiver is prohibited unless the pilot verifies the currency of the data base or verifies each selected waypoint for accuracy by reference to current approved data.
For VFR, it doesn't matter.

This is also covered in the AIM.
