Not when I fly a 172 or 182. Fuel selector on BOTH and it stays there. But, some folks don't do that. And I have seen uneven usage from one side to the other, so I'll accept this statement for now.

Hmm. Yea I knew you could switch in them, but I never knew why you would.
If alone, maybe he wanted to cancel out a lateral imbalance? That said, I've never had a C172 bank to the "heavy" side. Atleast not enough to matter.

BTW, I believe many planes (C172 too?) have something about no fuel flow between fuel selector positions. Something to ponder.

It was him and three womens in the plane, but I guess solo that's a possibility.

How do you make a 172 hauling 4 people go from somewhere in Mexico to Reno?

Or does the story not mention a fuel stop somewhere?

After typing that last reply, maybe he wanted to look heroic for the ladies .

A cursory search on Google says that some folks have issues with fuel vents allowing one tank to drain quicker than the other. Dunno though.

But my bet is on fuel exhaustion until more information is provided.

The DPE who administered my PP exam recommended using one tank at a time in a C-172, 1/2 hour intervals just like you'd do in a low wing. His reasoning was for long cross countries, you'd know how much fuel you had left when you ran a tank dry and switched. It was a backup to the fuel calculation kind of thought. I haven't done any cross countries long enough to need a fuel stop, so I haven't bothered, but it didn't seem ridiculous...
