I have been waiting for the release of the STC for my 182 ever since Dynon announced that they were getting an STC for the SkyView HDX system. With the expanded AML announcement of 2 weeks ago, I have been excited to get my equipment order and installed. That will be happening in the next week or two, and I will post some pics here.

For the background and upgrade path, I bought this plane 2.5 years ago. It took a lot of work just to get it airworthy, but as an avionics installer, I have had quite a few panel iterations. First, I installed a GTN625 and Trig TT22 transponder. I soon added a Dynon D10A vía the EAA STC. Then I upgraded to a GTN650 and a G5 HSI and removed my vacuum system. I installed an EI CHT/EGT sensor, then later removed that and installed an EI CGR-30P. Next I upgraded the GTN650 to an Avidyne IFD540 and the TT22 to the Avidyne AXP340. I also installed the Avidyne audio panel and the Freeflight ADS-B receiver, which I have recently upgraded to the Avidyne Skytrax100B receiver. I finally added the TruTrak auto pilot when he 180/182/185’s were added to their AML. He hopefully final revision for

The attached picture shows one revision, with plans for the HDX screen and the knob panel. I will be installing the 10” HDX screen with the engine monitor, ARINC converter (same wiring as GAD29 for G5 HSI) and ads-b dual band receiver. The CGR, D10A and G5 HSI will be coming out.

BTW, how much will you be asking for the CGR, G5 and D10a after you yank them out?
 
So... do you fly it or does it sit in your hangar so you can tinker? Can't wait for picks.

Sorta like the feature articles the hot rod magazines do when they show a barn find being returned to new found glory.

I’ll do my best to post pictures. It’s not a long process to upgrade, probably will take 10-15 hours. We put about 200-250 hours per year on it, so it doesn’t sit.
 
$24k-27k for the skyview, autopilot, and other stuff installed is pretty pricey. (sans engine monitor, coms, and second screen.)

Typically, the Basic Dynon System with a 10" screen (basic system includes all required components; 10" EFIS, backup battery,GPS receiver, adahrs, magnetometer, D10A backup efis and its backup battery. Some optional components that I always try to include are the main wiring harness, 10" avionics shelf tray and the Knob Panel) costs $16,790 including installation and cutting a new panel. This basic system in itself is a great system, and doesn't need any of the other components to be a big upgrade to most planes, with a 10" EFIS with synthetic vision, moving map, flight planning, HSI and the option of displaying approach plates and sectional and enroute charts.

I usually recommend the ADS-B receiver, which adds $1,200 including installation. That takes the system to $18,000.

Auto Pilot can vary greatly, from $4,160 for the 2-servo 172 system to $9,310 to the V-tail Bonanza 3-servo system, both prices including installation. Yes, that can get you to $27,000 for the Skyview, ads-b in and auto pilot, but that makes for an excellent upgrade.

The big difference I see in the Skyview system is the cost for additional options. A full engine monitor costs either $3,188 or $3,333 depending on 4-cylinder versus 6-cylinder planes. The price can increase a little if the engine is turbocharged and can decrease a little bit if you already have EGT and or CHT probes that are compatible with the Dynon engine monitor module.

ADS-B Out adds $2,500 with installation.

A second screen adds $4,680 for the 7" and $5,980 for the 10", both including the backup battery, harness, avionics tray and installation.

To connect to an IFR ARINC429 navigator adds $750 with installation.

Sorry if I got carried away with details, but it's exciting to see how much you can get for relatively few AMU's, especially compared to what was available just a year or two ago.
 
Here are a few more pictures of the panel as it was before the upgrade, including a shot of the panel as we flew home from Oshkosh. You can see the Avidyne equipment and the auto pilot in this one. I cut the breakout panel for the 5-pack before Dynon developed their avionics tray, so I need to recut the panel to fit that. We cut and powder coat in house, so that’s not a big project.

The D10A goes in the left hole. The right hole will be multi-purpose. CGR until we get the Dynon Engine monitor all hooked up. Trig COM for testing. Dynon Com for future option.

Hence the squared off sides. An adapter plate will allow us to mount the Dynon COM or auto pilot Panel there.

The knob panel is below the second com. I don’t have the horizontal unit yet, but this one works.

Yes, the big screen is touch screen.
 
Jesse, looks great! Question...can you control the Trutrak through the Dynon, or do you make all settings from the autopilot itself?
 
The Dynon will control heading, gps Nav, altitude and vertical speed on the TruTrak.
 
In this thread we’re not arguing the need for an auto pilot versus hand flying. Personally, I absolutely love my auto pilot after a couple of years hand flying.

Who peed in your cheerios? This is a pretty interesting thread if one is thinking about an avionics upgrade. Yes, Jesse has a business, but he also freely supplies information to all who ask. Not sure how he's taking advantage of anything. Are POA members such sheep that they will start buying stuff they don't need just because of a few pictures?

Lighten up Francis. His signature line clearly shows he's an avionics shop. He's not "selling his wares" he's detailing the installation process so people like myself who want to buy fancy gadgets we don't need but instead desperately want. If you want to hand fly your steam gauges more power to you. I for one will enjoy seeing other people spend $50k on LCD screens that get installed in $50k airplanes.

When I viewed the original post and have followed the thread, I found it helpful and interesting.

Yes, Jesse does have an avionics business, but I don't think that is why he is on these forums. I see lots of his posts on this and another forum I frequent, and what I see is someone who spends a lot of time helping others out. Many of the questions he answers / insight he gives is truly in the spirit of helping, and there seems to be no thought to the sale. He spent a lot of time helping me with a problem I had with something I had bought from someone else and installed myself in my RV-6.
 
I don't even own a plane but after seeing this thread, I decided to go out and buy one with the intention of taking it to the OP's place so I could pay to have a Skyview system installed. Now I find out the OP was only posting here to take advantage of people. That's pretty rotten. Thank goodness there are people who are willing stand up call out the OP for being the ruthless con artist that he he is and protect poor innocent victims like me.
 
I would typically agree with @timwinters about pseudo advertising threads (such as MauiWowie and his AoA), but in this case we are seeing photo history of @Jesse Saint doing an upgrade of interest to MANY in his own plane. The price information is of value, as is the STC progress.

I think the judges in the booth will overturn the flag on this play.
 
Tim is usually spot on with this stuff, but I have to disagree this time. The OP isn't blatantly selling anything, and I think this sort of upgrade is of general interest to anyone who owns an airplane.

Hang around here another 10 years or so, guys, and you'll see plenty of folks like this come and go. I don't have a problem with them coming here and selling themselves...if they stay in the classifieds. My problem is when they pollute the entire site with their obvious product schlepping. Whether it be avionics installs, overpriced plane wash products, strut cleaner or whatever.

They can be ignored in the classifieds...they're annoying and harder to ignore the general forums.
